Yellen to tour Durham renewable energy facility

Date:

U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen plans to visit the Triangle Tuesday to highlight the economic impact of climate change investments in the Inflation Reduction Act.

Yellen will tour a renewable energy facility in Durham before giving a speech in solar panel fields in Chapel Hill, according to an itinerary of the visit obtained by WRAL News.

According to the U.S. Treasury Department, Yellen’s speech will highlight the economic importance of confronting the climate crisis. Among the items on the itinerary:

  • 10:30 a.m. Yellen will tour the control center of Cypress Creek Renewables, a clean energy company that develops and operates distributed solar and storage projects.
  • 12:30 p.m. Yellen will give a speech at one of Cypress Creek’s solar panel fields in which she will detail how the Inflation Reduction Act’s climate provisions will create jobs, drive investment, spur economic growth, and reduce energy costs.

Later in the afternoon, Yellen will also visit a local organization to talk about Covid relief efforts and the American Rescue plan

The trip is part of a month-long national tour Yellen is making to promote President Biden’s economic agenda and to tout recent Democratic legislation that earmarks $375 billion over the next decade for projects that would boost clean energy infrastructure and offer financial incentives to taxpayers for climate-friendly consumer choices.

Earlier this month, Yellen spoke at Ford Motor Co.’s Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Michigan and visited an Internal Revenue Service facility in Maryland to deliver remarks on how the Biden economic agenda is restoring fairness to the tax code.
