Xpeng Leads Chinese Automakers in Smart Car Patent Applications in 2019

Electric vehicle startup Xpeng Motors ranked first among Chinese automakers in smart & connected car technology patents in 2019 with 335 patent applications. The company was also one of the top 20 patent applicants in China’s entire auto sector.

The data that came from “global automobile database service platform,” was jointly released by The China Automotive Technology Research Center’s Institute of Information Technology, and the Intellectual Property Branch of China Society of Automotive Engineers.

In addition to occupying the leading position in number of patents, Xpeng’s invention patent applications accounted for 76.28% of its published patent applications, the highest percentage among Chinese automakers, according to the data released. The Guangzhou-based EV maker also recorded the largest increase in total patent applications published among the top 30 applicants last year, with over an over 613% growth, increasing from 104 in 2018 to 742 in 2019.

“Our achievement in innovation and invention patents is a strong testimony of our dedication and focus on in-house R&D,” said Mr. He Xiaopeng, Chairman and CEO of Xpeng Motors. Over 60% of the company 4,000-plus global headcount is R&D related staff.

While Xpeng ranked 6th in China’s smart & connected car technology patents in 2019, the top 5 spots were taken by Toyota, Baidu, Honda, Ford and Bosch.
