Day 3 of Play-Ins for Worlds 2022 saw tensions running high.

With the happy announcement from Riot stating that all players had tested negative for Covid, all of the complete rosters were cleared to enter the stage in full force. Every single match during Day 2 was a smooth display of professional talent and decisive playmaking. We finally saw Detonation FM finally score their first hard-won victory in Worlds. And when all was said and done, EG and DRX fans walked away pleased with both teams earning 2 wins.

LOUD VS FNATIC (GROUP A)

There were some concerns if the CBLOL winners’ coordinated aggression could be enough to break FNATIC’s winstreak, but the game was not even close. With smart picks that have seen much success in the play-ins so far, LOUD was able to win the first clash for Scuttle that gave their team an early game lead. They contained Humanoid long enough for the rest of the team to win objectives, earning LOUD an easy Rift Herald. Despite messier clashes midgame, LOUD still came up on top with the first Baron. Brance’s Miss Fortune dominated bot lane throughout the game, while LOUD’s top Aatrox continuously played it safe against Uma Noid until he was able to dominate in the late-game. While smart FNATIC 3-man ganks disrupted their opponent’s ADR seconds before the second drake, LOUD was able to keep their hard-won momentum.

mad Lions VS SAIGON BUFFALO (GROUP b)

MAD vs SGB felt like a war of attrition, and despite Saigon’s strong crowd control and first blood, it was a very close match. Saigon played it very safe with multiple-man ganks, forcing more aggression from MAD. The tier 1 top tower gank by Armut and Kaiser gave the lions more momentum, which they carried to midgame. SGB scored careful picks before taking cloud drake, but it couldn’t stop the snowball. Elyoya’s triple kill ensured that the LEC representatives kept the kill advantage. And after SGB lost their 2nd tier top tower with a 4k gold difference, MAD won the last 5v5 and emerged victors.

MEGA BANK BEYOND GAMING VS DETONATION FM (GROUP A)

The winners of the LJL summer play-offs went up against PCS’s Beyond Gaming in a very precarious game.  BYG scored most of the kills early game while midgame bot ganks by DFM kept a close score. Strong crowd control from Steal’s Trundle prevented any push down mid lane during the constant back and forth. Detonation FM consistently played it safe until an ace at bottom lane finally swung the game in their favor, giving them time to get both baron and fire drake. Yutapon’s deadly plays as Kai’sa were unmatched, and despite both teams trading aces, DFM’s snowball won them the match.

EVIL GENIUSES VS CHIEFS ESPORTS CLUB (GROUP A)

Many expected the match between the 1st seed LCO and EG to end quickly. Jojopyun was a force to be reckoned with on the second day of Worlds 2022. The first blood by EG on top lane set the mood for the entire game. Inspired prevented an enemy flank with smart moves as Hecarim, stole the enemy’s Hex drake, and provided a strong defense for the team. The synergy between Jojopyun’s Azir and Inspired’s Hecarim was a well-oiled machine, dominating multiple clashes while their Herald pushed the Chief’s 2nd tier tower. Despite EG’s birthday boy losing momentum after engaging in a 1 for 1, CHF could only apply pressure during their slow and total defeat.

ROYAL NEVER GIVE UP VS ISURUS (GROUP B)

RNG won their third match 2-1 against LLA’s 1st seed, and it was a bloodfest. Royals have used their potential to the fullest in planning their play strategies so far, and by the end they achieved the highest number of kills for Worlds 2022. Seiya’s provocative Teemo top lane pick threatened to pull attention away from the other lanes. That being being said, the early game ganks by RNG Jungler Wei as Graves secured a comfortable lead with a  3-0 score. ISG Gavotto’s Bullet Time continuously broke RNG’s formations, but to no avail. The early kills earned Royal an advantage that got the 4th seed thru a confident midgame against the behemoth. GALA’s Kai’sa and Breathe’s Aatrox triumphantly shows Worlds why Royals won MSI 2022.

CHIEFS ESPORTS CLUB VS MEGA BANK BEYOND GAMING (GROUP A)

1st seed LCO vs 2nd seed PCS went toe-to-toe on the 6th match of Day 3 of Worlds 2022. Crowd control combos by Husha and Kino allowed Minji’s Sylas to score a double kill early game. Chief’s hungry team engagements against opponent towers turned to focused hit and runs while BYG maintained their lead. After numerous rotations, the Chiefs still weren’t able to keep Minji’s scaling under control. And while aggressive plays were able to secure picks for the Chiefs, they lost important engagements that gave BYG enough time to get Baron which was the final nail in the coffin. The Chiefs have been eliminated from Worlds 2022 Play-Ins Knockout contention.

ROYAL NEVER GIVE UP VS Istanbul WILDCATS (GROUP B)

RNG fought Turkey’s 1st seed to an early standstill that turned to RNG’s favor. On top of the fun fact that StarScreen also went Garen top lane during MSI 2022 against RNG, we saw smart ganks by Wei’s Sejuani while Xiaohu’s rotations as Sylas won numerous skirmishes. Ferret applied pressure for their ADR to push bottom lane, but allowed RNG’s jungler to grab the Rift Herald. Royal kept their gold advantage until the midgame, as GALA stayed untouchable as Tristana. Vicious teamfights led by RNG Breathe viciously laid their claim for supremacy as they approached late-game. Despite Serrin’s unprecedented 20HP triple kill as Akali, with 4 dragons under their belt, RNG secured their 2nd win of the day. The Istanbul Wildcats have been eliminated from Worlds 2022 Play-Ins Knockout contention.

ISURUS VS DRX (GROUP B)

LLA’s 2022 Closing Play-off winners went up against Korea’s DRX on Day 3’s final match-up. DRX has suffered no losses since Day 1, and the Argentinian brought their A-game. DRX BeryL led an invasion at red side and gave ISG’s jungler a rough start while Pyrosik’s rotation to bottom lane won a strong clash earning DRX more kills. Zeka was a lethal force that Seiya’s Azir struggled to fight against. With a 3-16 kill score late in the game, Isurus was spread too thin to push a lane and change the doomed outcome. Isurus has been eliminated from Worlds 2022 Play-Ins Knockout contention.
