What’s the difference between marijuana and hemp?

Date:

You’ve probably seen a variety of products containing hemp being advertised and sold in regular stores, but never products containing marijuana. Although they are both from the cannabis family, there are important differences between marijuana and hemp that you should know.

What is Hemp?

Legally, any Cannabis Sativa plant that contains less than 0.3 percent THC is classified as hemp. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive compound in cannabis that basically “gets you high”. As you can tell, 0.3% is an incredibly small amount which means that you won’t get high from hemp.

So, generally, hemp refers to any cannabis plant that is non-intoxicating and used for industrial purposes. It can be used for fiber (from the plant’s stems), protein (from seeds), oils and smokable portions (from the leaves and flowers). For instance, Hemp fibers can be used to make items including paper, clothing, furnishing fabric, rope, and building materials.
