What is XR? Why is XR the #Future?

The immersive technologies created quite a buzz in 2019, after replacing blockchain programmers as a hot commodity, with the demand for AR/VR engineer’s increasing by a whacking 1400%.

The “X” in XR is a placeholder, can have Virtual, Augmented, Mixed as it’s value.

Before diving in deep, let us first understand what VR, AR, MR are.

A ) Let me Get started with Virtual Reality (VR).

Breaking the word into two parts –

a) Virtual — anything that doesn’t exist physically.

b) Reality — Existence

Hence, making VR all about things that don’t have a physical existence, but can be simulated. This looks good from a perspective of understanding, but what is the proper definition of VR?

1. Designing for a modern 3D world: A UX design guide for VR

2. Scripting Javascript Promise In Spark AR For Beginners

3. Build your first HoloLens 2 Application with Unity and MRTK 2.3.0

4. Virtual Reality: Do We Live In Our Brain’s Simulation Of The World?

Types of Virtual Reality

a) Fully- immersive — Fully-immersive VR simulations allow users to experience artificial environments as the real world. These type of VR experiences involves three types of components: image, sound, and haptic feedback. This type of VR is commonly used for gaming and other entertainment purposes, headphones, gloves,head-mounted displays, and maybe a treadmill , other suspension apparatus are used.

b) Semi- immersive — Semi-immersive VR simulation provides users with a partially virtual environment to interact with. This type of VR is mainly used in training (eg. flight training) and educational purposes, which is made possible with graphical computing and large screen projectors. This type of virtual reality is not always possible to experience everywhere, physical environments are created to supplement virtual reality.

c) Non- immersive — The Non-immersive VR simulations, is very common in our daily lives. The type of experiences where the system detects your motion and translates it on-screen come under this. The average video game is also technically considered a non-immersive virtual reality experience, as it is all about interacting with a virtual space while sitting in a physical one.

B) Now, Let me talk about Augmented Reality (AR).

Augmented — Superimpose ( placing a thing over another)

As the name suggests, Augmented Reality is all about the interactive experience using digital world assets and then superimposing them in the real world.

This means the interaction here is happening by superimposing i.e. by placing a digital world asset over real-world assets such that both are evident. ( Clearly Visible )

Types of Augmented Reality-

a) Recognition Based Augmented Reality — This type of Augmented Reality comes handy whenever we want someone to scan a QR code or any other image, knows as AR Marker / Image Target, and superimpose a digital asset. What happens here is the AR app detects and recognizes the Image Target, once done recognizing it replaces the Image Target with a corresponding digital asset.

b) Location-Based Augmented Reality — Location-based AR works by using the smart devices’ location detection feature. This type of AR is having a huge market in the real world, is mainly integrated with maps, games, etc. The AR application uses your realtime location, brings all the digital asset files of the location from its database to life. The best example of a location-based Augmented reality app is Pokemon Go.

C) Mixed Reality — As the name suggests Mixed Reality, consists of both the real and virtual worlds to produce new visualizations and environments where physical and digital objects co-exist and interact in real-time. MR does not exclusively take place in either the physical or virtual world but is a hybrid of AR, VR. Mixed Reality technology is mostly used for virtual meetings, wherein headsets like hololens are used to simulate and project all necessary data like graphs and nodes in realtime.

Now, the most Important question Why is XR the #Future?

The Extended Reality industry saw a huge surge after the nationwide lockdown was announced. Virtual Reality is one of the technologies with the highest projected potential for growth, according to IDC research 2018, the investments in AR and VR will multiply 21 fold over the next four years, reaching 15.5 billion euros by 2022. During the lockdown, there has been a downfall in the E-commerce and Automobile industries. Hence, Mobile AR-enabled eCommerce could become a primary beneficiary. Now with the latest 5G standard has bought new chances for the evolution of XR, this standard will allow larger communities and more devices to stay connected. In addition, its almost imperceptible latency will make it possible for consumers to receive images in real-time, almost as if they were seeing them with their own eyes.

All this means that XR is no longer science fiction. It is integrated into our present and, in the coming years, it will lead to advances that will shape the future. Hence there is no shying away, from the fact the XR is the #Future.
