There are many great handheld consoles, but one that stands out is Sony’s PSP. First released in Japan in 2004, the PSP blew minds worldwide. With the ability to go on the internet, listen to music, watch movies, and most importantly, play video games, the PSP had it all.

What also elevated the console to another level was its catalog. Popular franchises such as Tekken, God of War, and Monster Hunter had incredible installments that were exclusive or debuted on the PSP. So without further ado, here are the best PSP games of all time ranked by sales.

Best PSP Games of All Time

  • 10. Tekken: Dark Resurrection
  • 9. Daxter
  • 8. Monster Hunter Freedom 2
  • 7. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
  • 6. God Of War: Chains of Olympus
  • 5. Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
  • 4. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories
  • 3. Gran Turismo
  • 2. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd
  • 1. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories

10. Tekken: Dark Resurrection – 2.2 Million Copies Sold

Since 1994, Tekken has been an influential fighting game series. With iconic characters, great music, and 3D graphics, Tekken has cemented itself as one of the best fighting game franchises out there.

With its long history, it’s not a surprise that Tekken had success on the PSP. Tekken: Dark Resurrection is an updated version of Tekken 5, which was released on the PSP.

The game featured three new characters that weren’t in Tekken 5: Armor King, Lily, and Dragunov; with Lily and Dragunov making their debuts in the franchise. Tekken: Dark Resurrection was a success, managing to sell 2.2 million copies, and it would also become available on the PlayStation 3.

9. Daxter – 2.3 Million Copies Sold

image

The fan-favorite sidekick of the Jak and Daxter series, Daxter would get the chance to shine in his own video game. Released in 2006, the video game sees Daxter go on an adventure to save his friend, Jak. Along the way, Daxter will meet new allies such as Osmo and Taryn, and also come across new villains such as Kaeden.

image

Daxter would prove to have star power, and his standalone title would become a successful PSP game. The title sold 2.3 million copies, making it one of the best PSP games of all time in terms of financial success. It’s been a long time since we’ve had a new installment in the Jak and Daxter series, and we’re itching to see the duo in a modern console.

8. Monster Hunter Freedom 2 – 2.4 Million Copies Sold

image

Monster Hunter is a massively popular franchise, and it’s very obvious when you take a look at this list. Apart from its financial success, the Monster Hunter series is revered for its gameplay, and Monster Hunter Freedom 2 is no exception. Players take on quests and hunt down monsters in this PSP game.

image

Fans of the series would go out in droves to buy the game, with Monster Hunter Freedom 2 selling 2.4 million copies. Although this is an impressive number, it’s the lowest-selling Monster Hunter title on this list.

This isn’t a criticism on Monster Hunter Freedom 2, but a compliment on how successful the franchise was on the PSP, and in general.

7. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII – 3.1 Million Copies Sold

image

Final Fantasy is one of the most successful franchises in video game history, and their games are routinely applauded for being great. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII would continue this trend as it told the story of Zack as he battles against Genesis.

The game is a prequel to Final Fantasy VII and features many of the game’s characters including Cloud and Sephiroth.

image

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII not only managed to expand the story of Final Fantasy VII but also sold a huge amount of copies; 3.1 million. With the Final Fantasy VII remake being released just last year, we would love to see this game come back to modern consoles.

Even if it doesn’t, we can still take solace in the fact that Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII was one of the best PSP games.

6. God of War: Chains of Olympus – 3.2 Million Copies Sold

image

Before the God of War trilogy, Kratos was still serving the gods. This game takes place during his years of servitude and sees him trying to rescue Helios, the Sun God.

Released in 2008, God of War: Chains of Olympus would prove that God of War is a successful franchise regardless of which console it was released on.

image

Chains of Olympus was one of the best-selling PSP games, with 3.2 million copies sold. The God of War franchise has been going strong since its inception, and the franchise doesn’t plan to stop anytime soon.

God of War: Ragnarok is set for release in 2022, and will continue the story set forward by 2018’s God of War.

5. Monster Hunter Freedom Unite – 3.8 Million Copies Sold

image

We’ve already mentioned Monster Hunter Freedom 2, but Capcom wasn’t done with the game. 2 years later, they released Monster Hunter Freedom Unite.

It’s an expanded version of Freedom 2, offering more quests, more monsters, and more weapons; taking the previous game and taking it to another level.

image

Freedom Unite not only expanded the gameplay of Freedom 2 but also expanded on its sales. Monster Hunter Freedom Unite sold 3.8 million copies, 1.4 million more than Freedom 2.

What’s even more impressive is that Freedom Unite still isn’t the best-selling Monster Hunter title on the PSP.

4. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories – 4.5 Million Copies Sold

image

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories is a prequel to Vice City. The story tells of the Vance brothers as they try to make a name for themselves in Vice City, but as they find out, that’s harder said than done. The game also features well-known actors such as Danny Trejo, Luis Guzman, and Gary Busey.

image

The financial success of Grand Theft Auto can’t be overstated, and this game would contribute to that success; Vice City Stories sold 4.5 million copies.

Fans of the series were happy with the game because even though it was on a smaller scale, it still delivered on the fun, craziness that they expect from a Grand Theft Auto game.

3. Gran Turismo – 4.6 Million Copies Sold

image

PSP was home to several racing games that included Need for Speed, Midnight Club, and Dirt. Another racing franchise that was represented on the PSP was Gran Turismo.

Some features of the game had to be minimized for all of the content to fit, with the game featuring over 800 drivable cars. Some of these brands included Alfa Romeo, Bugatti, and Ferrari.

image

Although there are plenty of racing games on the PSP, Gran Turismo is the best-selling one on the console. It sold 4.6 million copies and cemented itself as one of the most successful PSP games.

The series is still going strong, with Gran Turismo 7 set for release in the future, exclusively to the PlayStation 5.

2. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd – 4.9 Million Copies Sold

image

Released two years after Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Monster Hunter Portable 3rd made its debut on the PSP. The game features a boatload of weapons, with almost 900 of them being included in the game.

Some of the weapons include Sword, the Hunting Horn, the Switch Axe, and the Bow.

image

The best-selling Monster Hunter game on the PSP, Monster Hunter Portable 3rd sold 4.9 million copies. Monster Hunter dominated on the PSP, and the franchise is still on a roll.

In 2018, Monster Hunter: World would sell an astounding 17 million copies. On top of that, Monster Hunter Rise was released this year for the Nintendo Switch.

1. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories – 8 Million Copies Sold

image

Before Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, Liberty City Stories was released on the PSP, a prequel to Grand Theft Auto 3. The player controls Toni Cipriani as he returns to Liberty City and helps his boss, Salvatore Leone, gain control of the city. Both of these characters appear in Grand Theft Auto 3.

image

At the very top of the list of best PSP games of all time, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories would shadow the other titles. The game sold 8 million copies, 3 million more than second place.

Although Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories failed to reach that level, it’s hard to imagine that Rockstar is in any way upset by the total amount of sales.

Although the PSP was discontinued many years ago, it doesn’t take away from its impact. With its amazing features and games, the PSP was one of the best handheld consoles out there.

The Batman Arkham Games in Chronological Order

Published

The Batman Arkham series isn’t just the best Batman video game series, but one of the best superhero video game series in general. Filled with great gameplay, intriguing storylines, and a cast of interesting characters, the Batman Arkham series served hit after hit.

However, it can be confusing to newcomers because some of the games are prequels to others. So, here are the Batman Arkham games in order.

Batman Arkham Games in Order

  1. Batman: Arkham Origins
  2. Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate
  3. Batman: Arkham Asylum
  4. Batman: Arkham City
  5. Batman: Arkham VR
  6. Batman: Arkham Knight
  7. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

1. Batman: Arkham Origins

image

Although it was the third Arkham console game to be released, it’s the first in the story. Early into the career of Batman, his life is on the line when the criminal Black Mask puts a bounty on his head. This brings the attention of eight assassins who hope to kill the Caped Crusader and claim the money.

image

This 2013 title is also one of two Arkham console games that weren’t developed by Rocksteady Studios; it was developed by WB Games Montreal.

This studio isn’t done with Batman, they’re also developing the upcoming title, Gotham Knights. Although Gotham Knights is not a part of the Arkham universe, we’re still excited to play their game.

2. Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate

image

Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate is different than the other Batman Arkham games, instead of an action-adventure game, it’s a sidescroller.

As made clear by the title, it’s the sequel to Origins and the second game in the Arkham series. In this story, Batman must contain a riot happening in the prison Blackgate.

image

Blackgate was released on multiple consoles including the Nintendo 3DS and the PS Vita, the only Batman Arkham game to be released on those consoles.

It was developed by Armature Studio, the team that also developed another game featuring superheroes, Injustice: Gods Among Us for the PS Vita.

3. Batman: Arkham Asylum

image

Batman: Arkham Asylum is the first of the Batman: Arkham games to have been released, making its debut in 2009. 8 years after Origins, Batman is delivering the Joker to Arkham Asylum.

Quickly things go wrong and the Joker takes control of the asylum, releasing dangerous inmates that threaten Batman and the asylum workers.

image

It was the second game ever developed by Rocksteady Studios, and it would launch them into stardom. Beyond the amazing gameplay and story, what set the game apart were the performances by veteran actors such as Mark Hamill, Kevin Conroy, and Arleen Sorkin.

The three actors had previously voiced their respective characters in other media, most famously Batman: The Animated Series.

4. Batman: Arkham City

image

A year after Arkham: Asylum, Batman is thrown into another conflict, and forced to face off against dangerous criminals. Within the new prison city titled Arkham City, Batman must stop the evil plans of the Joker and Dr. Hugo Strange.

To make matters worse, both Batman and The Joker are poisoned; giving the Caped Crusader a limited time to save the day and himself.

image

Other notable characters include Catwoman, Two-Face, and the Penguin. Like the previous game, Arkham City features side missions that include many more characters.

The missions also help sell the chaotic environment of the prison and remind the player that there’s more danger in Arkham City than just the Joker and Dr. Strange.

5. Batman: Arkham VR

image

After the events of Batman: Arkham City, Batman finds himself in more trouble. After he discovers that both Nightwing and Robin have gone missing, it’s up to him to figure out what happened.

Like in previous Batman Arkham games, there’s more than one villain in the game, with Batman: Arkham VR featuring characters such as Killer Croc and the Penguin.

image

As stated in the title, this is the only Batman Arkham VR game. It wouldn’t be a Batman game without any of his fancy gadgets, and this game lets you play with three of them: a scanner, the bat-claw, and the iconic Batarang.

Although the game is more limited than previous Batman Arkham games, it makes up for it with a great story and new gameplay.

6. Batman: Arkham Knight

image

Batman: Arkham Knight takes place months after Batman: Arkham City and Batman must save Gotham from the Scarecrow and other villains.

One of these villains is the mysterious Arkham Knight who is connected to Batman’s past. The game features returning villains from previous games such as Two-Face, the Penguin, and Firefly.

image

With DLC content, characters such as Harley Quinn, Catwoman, Batgirl, and Red Hood become playable in their own stories that take place before and after the game’s main story. Batman: Arkham Knight also marks the first time the Batmobile is drivable, with the car also working as a tank.

The Batman Arkham games seem to end with Arkham Knight, but Rocksteady Studio is not done with the Arkham universe just yet.

7. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

image

Although this game doesn’t feature Batman as the main character, it’s being developed by Rocksteady Studios and is set in the Arkham universe. The game features the Suicide Squad, comprised of Harley Quinn, King Shark, Captain Boomerang, and Deadshot, as they fight off Brainiac.

image

Brainiac is able to mind control people and that’s exactly what he’s done to the Justice League, most notably Superman.

Although this is the debut of King Shark, Superman, and Captain Boomerang to the Arkham universe; Harley Quinn and Deadshot are established characters who had run-ins with Batman.

These were the Batman Arkham games in order. Rocksteady Studios (and the other developers) have done a great job with the series, and we’re excited to see what they have in store for us in Suicide Squad.

Pixel Frames: Mega Man 7 & Castlevania (Review)

Published

on

image

Jeffrey Harris Hacker Noon profile picture

@wheeljack84Jeffrey Harris

LA-based entertainment journalist & 411 Wrestling Interviews Podcast host.

Recently, the folks at Pixel Frames were nice enough to send over some samples of their impressive products.

Pixel Frames creates framed pixel artwork of classic and iconic video game scenes from retro games. If the 8 and 16-bit eras of gaming are in your wheelhouse, these are a nice affordable gift or piece of artwork to beautify your home or game room. All the pixellated art pieces from Pixel Frames are officially licensed products, and they nicely crafted items.

Author’s Note: As mentioned above, this is a product review based on review samples provided to us by Pixel Frames. However, these are my true thoughts and opinions on the product.

Pixel Frames provided me with two samples of their framed artwork for the purposes of this review. First up is a piece based on Mega Man 7 titled “Mega Man 7 – Dr. Wily.” It depicts Mega Man, Rush and Dr. Light confronting Dr. Wily from the opening stage of the game.

The other piece is based on the Castlevania series, specifically Castlevania: Dracula X or Rondo of Blood, depicting Richter Belmont vs. Dracula from the game. This piece is entitled “Intro to Dracula.”

image

The Pixel Frames pieces come in a generous size at 9×9 inches. What I especially like about the pixelated artwork is that it’s layered to mimic an almost type of three-dimensional effect, so it’s shadow box art. The backgrounds, character models and even the stage ground are all separate layers. There are small, transparent plastic pipes that hold up the Dr. Wiley model and even Mega Man’s life gauge bar.

Both pieces have really thick, durable wooden frames. Considering these have glass in their frame, they were sent to me nicely packaged and with great care.

Considering there is glass in this piece, I was especially encouraged with how these were packaged and shipped to me because they are clearly nice collectibles. The outer cardboard packaging also makes me less fearful to store or repackage these items as a gift. If gifting these items, I’d likely recommend stuffing the box with some loose paper or some bubble wrap to protect the front glass part of the frame.

Because the Pixel Art comes in fairly thick wooden frames, they could actually be stood up rather than hung on a wall depending on preference, provided there’s a shelf or case with enough surface area to safely place it on.

Overall these make exceptional display places for any type of game room, especially one themed around such 8 or 16-bit classics from Konami, Capcom, SEGA, or Nintendo. Each Pixel Frames piece is packaged with a small, commemorative plaque.

image

What I really like about the artwork is the scenes really just sort of create nice little time capsules, capturing my love and enthusiasm for the 16-bit era of gaming.

I think what I enjoyed the most about games at this time was how bright and colorful the pixelated worlds and characters looked, but I also felt it was a time of great innovation and expansion. The Pixel Frames definitely make me nostalgic for that.

Pixel Frames Recreates Classic Game Scenes for Your Living Room

As gaming art pieces, these are especially nice and would make a great gift for retro gaming enthusiasts or fans of classic games; or a friend or family member who are into the classic pixel gaming style.

Additionally, most of the pieces are very reasonably priced at $24.99. So, it’s not a gift or collectible that fans will have to break the bank over. Also, there are some smaller items in the Pixel Frames line that are sized at 6×6 inches rather than 9×9 that might be available for a cheaper price.

Besides the Mega Man and Castlevania art pieces, there are more editions from Pixel Frames from such classics as Sonic the Hedgehog, Altered Beast, Contra, Street Fighter II, Streets of Rage and more. There’s a nice variety of classic games to choose from, though, I’d definitely like to see Pixel Frames offer up even more art pieces from that era.

You can check out the selection of Pixel Frames for a variety of classic video games at InnexInc.com. Thank you to Pixel Frames for providing these samples for us to review.
