Continuing our Pokemon GO comparison series: today, we’ll be going over the choice between Gloom’s evolutions Vileplume and Bellossom.

Who would’ve thought that catching that Oddish in your local park could lead to such a difficult choice? Grass-type and poison-type Oddish (#043) evolves into Gloom (#044) using 25 candies. From there, trainers are given the choice to evolve that Gloom into a Vileplume (#045) using 100 candies or Bellossom (#182) with those candies and a Sun Stone.

We’re going to answer the pressing question: “is it worth it to use a Sun Stone on Bellossom?”

First, we’ll go over the specifics of both. Each Pokemon will receive its own subheading in region release order for reader convenience.

Vileplume

Vileplume is the “natural” Kanto evolution of Gloom—in that it doesn’t require any evolution items. IT has been in the game since its launch alongside Oddish and Gloom and its shiny form was released in October 2019. In can be found in the wild, though at a much less frequent rate than either of its pre-evolved forms.

Vileplume’s best moveset includes the quick move Razor Leaf and the charged move Solar Beam. It has a double resistance against other grass-types.

This Pokemon is also strong against fighting, fairy, electric, and water types with vulnerabilities to fire, psychic, and ice-types.

Its PokeDex number is 45. According to its PokeDex description, its pollen can cause “atrocious allergy attacks.”

Bellossom

Bellossom was added to the evolution tree with the release of the Johto region and, therefore, wasn’t implemented in Pokemon GO until February 2017. Its shiny variant was added alongside Vileplume during the same October 2019 event.

Interestingly, Bellossom drops its poison dual-typing to become a pure grass-type—a stark departure from the family tree. It has the following stats:

Bellossom’s best moveset includes the quick move(s) Razor Leaf and Bullet Seed with the charged move Leaf Blade.

It has vulnerabilities to flying, poison, bug, fire, and ice-types with a resistance to ground, water, electric, and grass-types.

Its PokeDex number is 182. Supposedly, according to its PokeDex description, when this Pokemon receives enough sunlight, “the leaves ringing its body begin to spin around.”

Ultimately, Vileplume is a better choice. It hosts higher stats, a higher CP threshold, less vulnerabilities, and better resistances. Additionally, its double-typing as a grass and poison-type gives it more versatility and potential on the battle field.

Bellossom, while cute and notably rarer than its sibling, simply does not hold up as well. While its charged move, Leaf Blade, is typically a better choice than Solar Beam, It simply isn’t enough to pull ahead.

Either way, however, both Pokemon tend to be outclassed by other grass-types, making this choice truly just a matter of preference or substitution than an outright critical decision.
