He was a legend on the footy field and now North Adelaide’s Team of the Century half-back flanker – and atomic physicist – John Riley is hoping to kick one more goal when he auctions his Walkerville home next month.

Riley played 218 games for the Roosters between 1977 and 1990 and a single game in the VFL.

Signed to Footscray in 1984, he made his first and only appearance in the opening round of the season. However, North Adelaide had not granted him a clearance to play and successfully got a Supreme Court injunction preventing him from representing Footscray.

Staying in South Australia allowed Riley to concentrate on his study and build a successful career in atomic physics.

“I did a Bachelor of Science and an honours degree in physics and then a PhD in atomic physics, so I spent a good seven years of my life at Flinders University, which was fun,” Riley said.

“I was playing footy at the same time, so I was very fortunate that the coaches I had were very supportive of me managing my career and football together.”

Having recently retired after a 34-year career in the defence sector, he is looking forward to a sea-change and says he hopes another family will love the 90 Lansdowne Tce home which has five bedrooms and a spacious rear yard with a swimming pool.

“My son grew up here with us kicking a footy together in the backyard, and as he grew up we would go down to Walkerville Oval so we had plenty of options,” Riley says.

“It will be sad to go but it’s time for a change, and it’s too big for just me now,” he said.
