Valara’s Gamble: Part 2

Date:

The adventure continues…

Valara’s head hurt. She reached up and felt a lump on the top of her head. She opened her eyes and saw the ceiling of her cabin.

“Computer, what happened?”

“We crash landed on Planet Drovoiky”

“What?!”

“Yes, Miss Valara. The ship was severely damaged.

“So what do we do now?”

“You must stay here until rescue arrives. There is no other option.”

“No, I’m going to find a way to fix the ship. Where are the maintenance records?”

“They are stored in the main computer core. However, I am unable to access them. I can only tell you that they are located in the engineering section of the ship.”

“How do I get there?”

“The door to the engineering room is locked. You must use your override code to enter the room. It is 0x00001D8B9.”

Valara sighed and unbuckled her seat harness and stood up. She had to get to engineering.

The engineering room was quiet and dimly lit. It was almost like being inside a cave. The walls were lined with rows of equipment, which were mostly labeled in alien script. Valara couldn’t read the labels, but she could see a display on the wall with a keypad underneath. Valara punched in 0x00001D8B9. A loud clunk sounded and the door to engineering slid open.

Computer: “Please look at the displays to the right of the console. They will show you the status of your ship.”

The first display showed a schematic of the ship.

The second display was labeled “Maintenance Log.” It listed every component of the ship, and the date when it was last inspected.

Valara stared at the list for several minutes. She wasn’t sure what she was looking for. She turned back to the console and tried to make sense of the various displays. There were nine components flashing red on the ship’s schematic display.

─ Communication
─ Weapons
─ Navigation
─ Interstellar drive
─ Shield
─ Control panel
─ Landing gear
─ Power converter
─ Life support

“Shit!” Valara shouted, banging her fist on the bulkhead. “This is not good! Computer, is there any way to shut down the ship?”

“There is a manual switch on the console to turn off the ship’s power supply. But you cannot survive without life support. The ship has been running on reserve batteries since the crash.”

“Can I repair the life support system?”

“Yes, Miss Valara. However, I do not believe you have the tools or materials necessary. My sensors indicate a repair facility located 15 miles from our location. It will take approximately five hours to reach the repair station.”

“What about the shields? Can I repair those?”

“Yes, Miss Valara. I can repair the shields. But we lack the necessary components.”

“How long will it take to get the parts?”

“It will take three days for the nearest transport to arrive if I signal it now.”

Valara sighed in frustration. “We don’t have three days for the transport. I will have to go to the repair facility myself and get the components.”

“Miss Valara, you should remain aboard the ship until rescue arrives. This planet has random geomagnetic sandstorms that can blind you and take you off of your path leaving you disoriented and lost. Your chances of survival are much greater if you remain here.”

“Duly noted, thanks”, Valara said as she walked out of the engineering room and headed toward the bridge.

She stopped in front of the door leading to the corridor and took a deep breath. She had to start somewhere. She put her hand on the contr
ol pad and entered the override code. The hatch door to the planet outside slid open and her eyes widened in surprise at what she saw.

Hours later, an exhausted and very dirty Valara staggered into the yard of the repair facility. A huge hangar was in front of her. The sun was setting, and the night sky was filled with stars. A few lights glowed from the windows of the facility. She approached the building and knocked on the door. After a moment, it slid open. An alien peered out. He wore a jumpsuit covered in grease stains. “What can I help you with?” he asked.

“My ship crashed,” said Valara. “I need some parts.”

The alien led Valara into the repair facility. Inside, thousands of robots worked on different pieces of equipment.

“I have some schematics and parts for your ship here in small and large crates…”
