April Fool’s is a good time for messing around with friends and just having fun. For games, it allows developers to put in new modes or edits to games that would otherwise be not allowed in their titles. Take R6 Siege’s event, Rainbow is Magic, where the entire game has been retextured and modeled with a storyteller announcer and teddy bear hostages. For this year, Epic decided to make reference to one of 2021’s most influential memes, Stonks, with a brand new Fortnite skin.

Diamond Hanz and r/wallstreetbets

The Fortnite Diamond Hanz skin, a reference to the crypto and stock trader term “Diamond Hands” in which the owner of said stock or cryptocurrency doesn’t sell, is modeled after the Stonks meme. The meme is a picture of a 3D rendered head known as “Meme Man” in front of a stock exchange background and the caption “stonks”.

The importance of this meme comes from the recent “gamestonks” phenomenon, where members of the subreddit r/wallstreetbets convinced a number of internet users to invest in the company GameStop, sending it’s stock price from 12 dollars to 400 dollars a share, much to the ire of Wall Street itself.

The GameStop stock price phenomenon was so influential it caught the attention of mainstream media, being broadcast on multiple news networks. Many stated that purchasing stocks from GameStop was a way of “sticking it to the man”, as they were playing the same game as the brokers on Wall Street.

For Fortnite, it is not surprising they made this skin a reality, considering they’ve made strange skins before. With their licensing agreements from the previous season, they’ve had characters such as Ryu and Chun-Li of Street Fighter fame, the Predator, The Mandalorian from the Star Wars series, Sarah Connor and the T-800 from the Terminator series, or Ellen Ripley and the Xenomorph from the Alien series.

However, to have a Fortnite create a skin based off of a meme, and a influential one at that, for an April Fools joke surprised many in the community.

How Do I Get Diamond Hanz

The skin is currently in the shop as of April 1st, so if you have 1,200 V-Bucks to spare, you can net yourself the Diamond Hanz skin and the Stonks emote, both a part of the “To the Moon” set.

This begs the question of whether Epic may add more meme skins to Fortnite in the future. With the end of the recent season, any character, or any meme for that matter, could be boarding the battle bus in the near future, so keep an eye out!
