Sahip olan introduced the Lamborghini Urus Performante during the new car introduction orgy at Monterey Car Week, the Bolognese automaker has followed with a new base model, the Lamborghini Urus S.

While the Performante brings new levels of performance to the Urus, with a 0-62 mph time of 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 190 mph, the Urus S receives similar treatment with an upgraded powerplant.

“The Urus has proven its appeal for those seeking the decisive combination of the sportiest SUV and a Lamborghini to drive every day: the Urus S sits perfectly alongside the new Urus Performante, for those choosing the purest sublimation of performance, luxury and versatility,” said Stephan Winkelmann, chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini.

Of course, when you consider the Urus’s two trim levels, the base vehicle could be the better deal. 

Consider the Performante the track-focused Urus, with the S model being ideal for the rest of us. Yes, the Performante has the aggressive style you’d expect of a more sporting Lamborghini, the S shares its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 with its higher-performance sibling.

Generating the same 657 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque as the Performante through an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, performance is two-tenths of a second slower in the S versus the Performante, performance that few drivers will notice or miss.

The difference comes from the Performante’s carbon fiber, titanium and other materials that remove 104 pounds from the vehicle’s weight for faster performance. 

But given the S’s slight difference in speed, aka 0-62 mph in 3.5 seconds rather than the Performante’s 3.3 seconds, most buyers will be perfectly happy with the S. Both Urus models have a top speed of 190 mph.

But the Urus S receives more than just a bump under the hood. A retuned exhaust possesses a more distinct sound upon start-up and a sharper note in each drive mode, which includes Strada, Sport, Corsa and Ego. The Urus also has three off-road drive modes: Terra, Neve and Sabbia.

But an SUV whose lineage dates from the 1986 Lamborghini LM002, aka the “Rambo Lambo,” requires a wardrobe equal to its mission. And so the Urus S receives a redesigned lightweight carbon fiber painted hood with matt black air vents, although gloss black, body color or carbon fiber in shiny or matte finishes are available, as is an optional carbon fiber roof.

There’s also a new front bumper and matte black stainless steel skidplate accented by black lines on the front grille. Buyers can choose body color, shiny black, and carbon fiber components in shiny or matte finishes. 

Out back there’s a new streamlined matte black rear bumper with a revised brushed steel twin-pipe exhaust design that can be optioned in matte black, gloss black or bright chrome. The Urus wears 21-inch wheels, but 22-inch titanium matte or diamond polish finish Nath rims, or 23-inch bronze or diamond polished Taigete wheels can be specified.

The wardrobe update continues in the cabin with a new selection of color and trim options, including revised two-tone palettes that include an optional Urus Performante stitching pattern.

Lamborghini didn’t provide pricing for the 2023 Lamborghini Urus S, although he 2022 model starts at $229,495. But the mid-cycle refresh is just a holding pattern to what’s coming next, as Lamborghini begins electrifying its lineup. The company expects to fully electrify its lineup by 2024. 

Given that, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Urus gets a plug-in hybrid driveline derived from the Porsche Panamera’s set-up. But while the Italian automaker says that electrification is coming, it has yet to reveal any details.
