Toronto Ultra upset Chicago OpTic during the Stage 2 Major

Date:

Toronto Ultra sent OpTic Chicago down to the Losers Bracket of the CDL Stage 2 Major after losing map one.

OpTic Chicago looked shaky during the Stage 2 group stage after they got swept in back-to-back matches against the Florida Mutineers and Minnesota Rokkr. Toronto Ultra also struggled while playing through Group A, but overall looked like a more solid team.  However, in the matchup against OpTic Chicago Ultra looked to be an unstoppable force.

Checkmate Hardpoint was the opening map of the series and eventually went the way of OpTic, despite the effort from Ultra. The Ultra never let OpTic pull too far away with the lead and made sure to keep the score as close as possible. OpTic eventually pulled though after Brandon “Dashy” Otell and Dylan  “Envoy” Hannon made the early rotate, winning the map 250-236.

Moscow Search and Destroy went to a round-eleven after Ultra was down 3-5 against OpTic. Jamie “Insight” Craven was the savor for Ultra after going 9/7 on the map. OpTic was unable to close out the game despite their two-round lead over Ultra. Envoy, OpTic’s Search and Destroy powerhouse, had a slow map at 5/9 overall with the most first-deaths in the game.

Toronto Ultra push OpTic Chicago to their limits

Raid would be the final maps of the series for both Control and Hardpoint. OpTic Chicago had looked solid on Raid for both Control and Hardpoint in past matches. However, Ultra danced around OpTic during the Control to secure the win. After winning the first round, Toronto Ultra attempted to gain the lead by OpTic answered back on defense to tie up the game. The Ultra did not take the loss lying down and would win back-to-back rounds for the lead in the series.

OpTic Chicago’s veteran Seth “Scump” Abner had a fantastic Control despite losing the map. At 33/29 he attempted to carry Dashy who struggled to perform at 19/26. Despite his performance on Control, Scump fell into a rut on the second Hardpoint. The score was just as close as Checkmate had been earlier in the series, but ultimately a 17/25 performance from Scump hurt the team. Ultra pulled away with the win after defeating OpTic 250-234 on Raid Hardpoint.
