Users of The Sandbox, a blockchain-based metaverse firm, have been issued a security alert due to a malware programme. An outsider breached an employee’s computer and utilized the information it acquired to send a phishing email. Purporting to come from The Sandbox, according to a company blog post.
The Sandbox team said that the third party had access to a number of email addresses as a result of the security breach, which was discovered on February 26. The email was sent to those recipients with a phoney sender address, pretending to be from the firm.
Secretly Infiltrating User System
Furthermore, Malware-infested URLs were disguised as advertisements for “The Sandbox Game (PURELAND) Access” in an email with that title. By doing so, the exploiter was able to secretly infiltrate a user’s system and install malware without the user’s knowledge or consent, giving the exploiter complete access to the compromised system and all of its data.
Moreover, the organization issued a warning about potential phishing attempts and asked users not to click on any links included in the phishing email or any other strange emails. Users were also urged to use strong passwords and use two-factor authentication.
And even though, the Sandbox made it clear that the third party only had access to one employee’s computer through a malware programme. At no other time were any other The Sandbox services or accounts compromised.
All affected parties have been contacted via email, and the employee’s compromised password has been changed. The group is keeping an eye on things and trying to improve security rules and procedures in response.
