Cryptocurrency
By Hogefather, aka Jesse J Rogers
I have some big news upcoming, as well as several articles to release that I think will be pretty important to the long run culture of the Hoge project.
But before those are ready, I want to take some time to recap and revisit the journey so far. I didn’t realize quite how much time and effort I’ve put into Hoge Finance until sitting down to write this.
Now to be transparent, I’m still down between 1/3 and 1/5 on my initial investment because of the unfortunate bad timing of my biggest entry point, but I still believe in Hoge as much as ever.
True, a lot of my ideas mostly went ignored(i.e. rallying support for Andrew Yang’s mayoral candidacy or LeVar Burton’s bid for Jeopardy). But more often than not the community did respond very positively to what I had to say, and I’m quite grateful for the audience and the support.
I’ve even had donors to my crypto wallet (listed on my Twitter bio)!
I think competition for Patreon is a major use case for crypto, especially once Proof of Stake is more popular and transaction costs become negligible. When fans can send $.50 worth of frictionless value to their favorite creator, I think people are generous enough to do that far more often than is commonly understood. But right now, when it costs $30 worth of Ethereum just to initiate the send, let alone get any value through, it’s still kinda hard to see the patronage model scaling.
At any rate, here is everything I’ve written about crypto, ranked by popularity.
The article that started it all. As of this writing, this article still ranks on the first page of Google, and its popularity convinced me that not only was there something big going on with Hoge, but I could be an active part of it.
This was the first article that I wrote regarding cryptocurrency, every month it is still one of my most popular, and its massive success convinced me to keep going. Almost every article I’ve written since has gotten distributed, which for many months used to be quite rare for me.
I later found out when interviewing her that Andreea Mocanu (the Head of Finance for Hoge) was a reader of mine and already knew of me before Hoge was even a thing because of this article. Small world!
Hoge Finance has an unusually strong team of professionals (for the microcap crypto space) volunteering their time and energy to the project. Some of those professionals include lawyers, wealth managers, and accountants who created a legal entity in France, a Swiss Association in Zug, and a DAO to allow the community to govern those institutions.
This article was the announcement of this organizational structure, along with my commentary on it. It turned out not to have the immediate impact on price that I hoped it would, but in the long run I’m confident that it has laid the groundwork for sustained success.
Hoge arose rather spontaneously by community effort. No one mastermind had a preconceived plan for it to become what it did. I’m confident that use cases will emerge as the size of our community and the talent pool it can draw from continue to grow. The NFT functionality had to be programmed in, and many other ecommerce or DeFi capabilities will be added, no doubt.
But ultimately, when people ask you “what’s the coin for?” you have to have an answer. This was mine.
These days we commonly say “they’re brothers”. Hoge and Doge are basically on good terms, and a lot of people in our community own both, and also subscribe to “Do Only Good Everyday” as our mantras. But in the early days of Hoge there were some people in the Doge community who felt threatened and were spreading some serious FUD about us. I preferred to just ignore it. Not everyone in Hoge Army would. So in order to restrain and placate the aggressive elements that wanted to lash out at Doge, I promised “I’ll handle it”. This article is how I did so.
But to be crystal clear, I love Doge, and even own some myself.
Our listing on BigONE was a key moment for Hoge. We had been down in price for a while and at that time we were losing some momentum to projects that were on the Binance Smart Chain such as Safemoon. Getting listed on a top 25 exchange was a really big deal for us and set us up for even bigger accomplishments to come. Mostly I summarized the AMA conversation with Wiser, Hogeman, Jrocko3, and Wasso. I pulled out a few great quotes, too. I would later go on to start interviewing them myself on the Hogefather YouTube channel which at this point I hadn’t yet created.
My work on the new whitepaper really began with this draft. It isn’t my most widely read piece (that’s unsurprising; 16 minute reads are less popular than 4 minute reads) but I think it might be my single most comprehensive, best written, and maybe most important work so far with regard to Hoge.
I do want to say that I no longer believe that it is important for us to stay solely on Ethereum and not bridge anywhere else. There are ways to prevent it causing the kind of problems I initially feared when I wrote this article. There’s a lot more to be said on this later on in future articles.
At one point I planned to do weekly updates of the burn, my favorite memes, and other news, but quickly lost interest with this because I get bored with tasks that feel as if they should be automated. Besides, other people are more reliably willing to do repetitive stuff this such as @hogeburn on Twitter.
The bravado I put into this article makes me feel like such a dum dum now, after everything. Nothing is certain in crypto, and I should have been a lot more humble about that. Crypto.com is a great platform and an exchange I’ve used a great deal and I’m not knocking it in any way, but my expectations for quick gains did not account for Bitcoin taking such a dive, or for other projects to have been so much more profitable than this one was. I still have a few hundred dollars left in CRO, but my expectations are now much lower and more long range after having lost money liquidating most of my holdings.
I posted this everywhere that Bitcoin gets attention, hoping to win some friends and an audience. If I was lucky, maybe some would take an interest in the other coins Hogefather is interested in — namely Hoge. Instead I got basically zero traction, and was completely ignored by the Bitcoin community. I think there’s already plenty of content out there for them to read, so with no authority or reputation in that community, in no way did I stand above the crowd. I will continue to write content for no-coiners so that they can join the revolution, but I definitely need to rethink my strategy of how to get people to listen.
I’m still not totally sure if I was duped on this or not, but suffice it to say that I didn’t win.
The rest of my other articles each only got a few hundred reads. I liked many of them quite a bit and was a little disappointed that some of my hobbyhorses weren’t more popular. Popular doesn’t equal quality, and I think some of my best gems are buried in here. Still, I appreciate those who did take the time to consider my perspective, and the fact that Medium kept distributing them was encouraging in and of itself. Not every one of these directly relate to Hoge, per se, but they do zoom out and tell you a bit more about where I’m coming from.
It was only two months ago that I rebranded my Compounding Interest Podcast into Hogefather. I do still have one episode on my channel with the old intro and branding.
By no means am I done. Eventually, I think there will be enough here for a book and a course. I don’t know if I’ll leave this up for free indefinitely or if I’m someday going to charge for this content. I suppose that depends on whether the donation model seems to be working, or whether I have to sell my content. But for now, the Hogefather collection is free for the world to share and enjoy.
Thank you for your time and attention. I hope I’ve inspired you to start creating content as well, because there’s still so much work left to be done in building this small community into a movement, and this humble startup into the preeminent brand in Decentralized Finance (DeFi).
