TDK Ventures invests in seed round for dry lithium-ion electrode manufacturing startup, AM Batteries

SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 20, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — TDK Corporation (TSE: 6762) announced today that subsidiary TDK Ventures Inc. invests in AM Batteries (AMB) to support the commercialization of their dry electrode coating technology that improves the manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries built on a bedrock of unmatched expertise in advanced chemistry, surface science, and precision additive manufacturing. AMB’s electrodes not only have the potential to save cost, but also offer a path toward fast charging, higher-energy density, and adaptability. AMB has early industry attraction to adopt this technology for pilot scale to mass production.

AMB has developed a novel additive Li-ion manufacturing technique by which the active materials (cathode/anode) are charged and sprayed onto metal foil current collectors, which are then processed to its final state to make batteries without the use of toxic solvent. This dry- coating method offers significant cost and energy savings over state-of-the-art “wet coating” procedures, providing a dramatic improvement to the sustainability of the overall cell making process. TDK Ventures’ investment in AMB marks its continued focus on core technologies that catalyze broader decarbonization efforts via sustainable and scalable battery technologies.

Riding the rising tide of EVs, the demand for lithium-ion batteries has never been higher – with an expected need for more than 2,000 GWh by 2030. With this significant manufacturing capacity demand, environmental and carbon footprint are under increased scrutiny. Current wet-electrode manufacturing techniques consume up to 50% of the total manufacturing energy of the entire battery, require significant factory footprint to dry the solvent, and increase the CAPEX required for manufacturing plants. One of the most fundamental problems for battery manufacturers today is refining manufacturing techniques. Refining manufacturing techniques to remove the solvent is one of the most fundamental problems for all battery manufacturers today in the consumer electronics, large scale energy storage, and EV markets.

During Tesla’s 2020 Battery Day last year, CEO Elon Musk said that dry-electrode technology is one of the most vital components for a step-change in the cost reduction of EV batteries; he also stated significant room for the technology’s maturation and improvement. Tesla acquired Maxwell Technologies in early 2019 with an eye on potentially commercializing their dry-electrode technology.

Groundbreaking ceremony in Blomberg: Phoenix Contact builds an energy-efficient facility for machine building

The new building will consolidate all the machine building units currently scattered around the Blomberg site, bringing them together in one place. The 18,500 m² site provides space for a production area, offices, and a canteen. In the future, 400 employees will work here. Energy efficiency was a top priority during the planning. Along with the high insulation standard of the building enclosure, heat recovery via a ventilation system and air compressors, and highly efficient plant technology, a photovoltaic system of more than 750 KWp will be installed on the roof. This way, a large portion of the energy demand can be covered by green electricity. The heart of the heating and cooling system is an ice storage tank that will provide the energy for the heat pumps, a technology that utilizes the high amount of energy released by freezing water in order to support heating. The ice that forms in this process can be used for low-cost cooling. “When the system is combined with solar collectors for the ice tank, we can store regenerative energy at a low temperature level without any losses,” Stührenberg explains. “This is yet another building block for increasing our share of self-generated energy from renewable sources.”

IJGlobal reconhece a Atlas Renewable Energy com os prêmios Acordo de Energia do Ano ESG de 2020 e Social ESG

O prêmio Social ESG foi concedido ao programa da Atlas “Somos parte da mesma energia”, uma iniciativa social lançada no Brasil, Chile e México, e implementada durante a fase de construção dos projetos de energia solar que a empresa está atualmente desenvolvendo nesses países.

O programa visa capacitar a força de trabalho feminina local com treinamentos que permitirão às mulheres optar por trabalhos mais técnicos na construção dos projetos. Ao mesmo tempo, a Atlas mobilizou seus empreiteiros para, no processo de contratação, dar prioridade às mulheres que participaram dos treinamentos. Esta iniciativa se tornou o principal programa social da Atlas e está alinhada com os Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável da ONU (5 – Igualdade de gênero, 8 – Trabalho decente e crescimento econômico, 10 – Redução de desigualdades e 12 – Consumo e produção responsáveis).

Até hoje, aproximadamente 1.000 mulheres foram treinadas em diferentes áreas, como construção civil, carpintaria, saúde e segurança, montagem de módulos, eletricidade, entre outras. Isso nos permitiu aumentar dos habituais 2% para 15% a participação feminina na construção dos projetos.

O programa “Somos parte da mesma energia” deve ser implementado nos novos projetos da empresa para que mais mulheres possam se beneficiar desses treinamentos e encontrar novas oportunidades de carreira.

A Usina Solar Jacarandá no Brasil também foi reconhecida pela IJGlobal com o prêmio Negócio de Energia Solar do Ano (Américas) devido à implementação bem-sucedida do programa “Somos parte da mesma energia” durante a construção do projeto.

Durante esse período, mais de 214 mulheres foram treinadas em habilidades técnicas. Entre as mulheres treinadas, 123 foram contratadas para fazer parte da construção da Jacarandá. No total, 159 mulheres foram contratadas, o que representou 17% do trabalho total contratado na Jacarandá durante o pico das obras. O projeto também se concentrou em contratar grupos sub-representados, como a população afrodescendente no estado da Bahia, que formou a maior parte da força de trabalho, 85% e 83% de homens e de mulheres afrodescendentes, respectivamente.
