FROM gorgeous homes to glamping rest rooms, social housing to a creative arts school, the best of the best is on show in the annual architecture awards.
This year’s Tasmanian Architecture Awards highlights the work of two dozen projects showcasing the range of diverse architecture produced across the state.
Australian Institute of Architects Tasmanian Chapter president, Stuart Tanner, said across all building types, an extraordinary level of precise work and design resolution was on show in the program.
“It’s heartening to see the skills of Tasmanian architects applied right across the spectrum of our built environment,” he said.
“It lifts everything up, and people are starting to understand why design matters and how it can contribute positively in society.
“It can foster a sense of civic pride and elevate how Tasmania is viewed on a national or international basis.
“It also goes a long way toward promoting Tasmania as forward-thinking, innovative and sophisticated.”
While each of the projects stands on their individual merits, Mr Tanner said they were also part of the Tassie design language.
He said Tasmania’s environment was relatively unique and challenging, which influences the work architects produce.
“Buildings need to respond to our conditions that can be freezing cold or scorching hot in the same week,” he said.
“Architecture is driven by climate, context and landscape, and architects respond to that with their design, materials and the way a building performs.
“We are also blessed to have this amazing landscape to design amongst.”
The 2022 Tasmanian Architecture Awards presentation dinner will be held at Spring Bay Mill over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.
An awards exhibition launch will be held at Brooke St Pier on Thursday, May 26. It will be open to the public through June.
