Nine years on from Flying Wild Hog Studios' first reboot of the Shadow Warrior franchise, it's all change with the third series entry. Protagonist Lo Wang's voice is different, the gameplay itself has evolved and crucially - from a Digital Foundry perspective, at least - the engine technology powering the experience has moved on.
The impressive Road Hog engine takes a backseat this time to Unreal Engine 4 - a controversial decision that doesn't quite pay off. Meanwhile, the lack of native current-gen versions of the game is a genuine disappointment - owners of new consoles essentially get accelerated versions of the last-gen game, missing key visual features.
Stalker 2 has been in development for quite some time, but progress has had to take a necessary pause. The game’s developer, GSC Game World, is Ukrainian. Due to the nation’s current circumstances, game development is, understandably, not a priority. Development of the game is actually based in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv. So the safety of the people working on the title is of the utmost importance, hence the temporary break from forward progress. It is, of course, entirely unclear as to when development will be able to continue, as Ukraine is under attack by Russia.
The hiatus was announced today alongside a video published onto YouTube by GSC Game World. The video was initially planned as an update for fans of the game to be able to get a glimpse of how the motion capture system would work. For the first 30 seconds, this footage is shown, with actors wearing motion-capture suits and pointing prop firearms at one another.

Secret World was created using Unreal Engine 4.26. The battles take place in a simulation written entirely in C++ that executes game instances in less than a few milliseconds. This is then connected to Unreal Engine and visualized. The simulation is deterministic, which means that the server can save very small input values and replay any match. Secret world will be able to easily archive every battle that has ever been fought.

In case you haven't heard yet, Bloodborne is now available on PC...well, not really. Bloodborne PSX is a PS1-style demake of the essential PlayStation 4 action RPG, created by Unreal Engine 4 wizard Lilith Walther. It's not a recreation of the full game — just a healthy chunk of its opening hours, with some new bits thrown in for good measure. The whole thing's impressively accurate — it even mimics the direction of certain cutscenes, and the gameplay feel isn't that far off the original release.
It's one hell of an achievement, and swathes of PC gamers are lapping it up. Bloodborne PSX is free to download (you can find it through here), and it managed to hit a whopping 100,000 downloads in less than a day.
