Three Reasons to Think Canada When Developing Regenerative Medicine, Microfluidic-Based assays, and Cell Therapy Applications

Personalized medicine approaches can transform the field of biomanufacturing through the use of additive manufacturing technologies. Successful implementation of such processes requires an interdisciplinary effort with engineers, biologists, and clinicians working together to achieve success developing regenerative medicine, microfluidic-based assays, or cell therapy applications. As an American working in Canada, I am continually impressed by […]

Pushing the rheological and mechanical boundaries of extrusion-based 3D bioprinting

3D bioprinting has long been subjected to trade-offs between physicochemical and biological outcomes. The resulting material properties of the initial bioinks and final printing products usually lie within a moderate range, which limits the application of bioprinting and its products. Recent progress in bioinks and bioprinting techniques has significantly expanded the window of material properties. In this review, I define two bioprinting windows to clarify the trade-offs between physical chemistry and biology and provide a comprehensive overview of recent advances that have pushed the rheological boundaries of bioinks and mechanical boundaries of bioprints, focusing on unusual material properties.

Cannabis – The study that blew my mind

I was a young cannabis research student on my first trip overseas to an international research conference. Of all the places in the world to experience your first science, the cognitively liberal nation of the Netherlands and the beautiful town of Leiden were pretty high up there. I did not know what to expect and […]

Bioprocessing technology of muscle stem cells: implications for cultured meat

Muscle stem cells (MuSCs) are essential for the growth, maintenance, and repair of skeletal muscle. In the emerging area of cultured meat, meat products are manufactured with MuSCs using theory and technology from the fields of cell culture, tissue engineering, and food processing. Recently, considerable progress has been made in bioprocessing technologies for MuSCs, including isolation, expansion, differentiation, and tissue building. Here we summarize cutting-edge operational strategies and recently characterized regulatory mechanisms for MuSCs.
