Deep Rock Galactic update 1.02 live on PS4 and PS5

Developer Ghost Ship Games has deployed a new post launch patch for Deep Rock Galactic. Update 1.02 is now live on PS4 and PS5, with a small list of changes after reports of issues from the player community. As with most online multiplayer games, Deep Rock Galactic has witnessed a number of crashes and server woes. It’s worth noting that, in our experience with the PlayStation version, we’ve yet to stumble upon such issues. Ghost Ship Games has released version 1.02 which is now available to download and install on PS4 and PS5. According to the devs, it makes the following changes: – Crash caused by impatient dwarves spamming X on the start screen – Serverlist pretending every game is in the US – US players not getting the sign-on bonus from Starter/Ultimate DLC Deep Rock Galactic has finally arrived on PlayStation after previously launching on both PC and Xbox systems. It is currently one of the three games available to download this month as part of Sony’s PlayStation Plus line-up. It is joined by Dirt 5 and Persona 5 Strikers. The PlayStation version of this space dwarf co-op shooter has some extra bells and whistles compared to the PC and Xbox versions currently available. On PS5, it has been confirmed that the DualSense’s touchpad can be used to control the Terrain Scanner tool. Meanwhile, the gamepad’s built-in speakers will bark orders at players from Mission Control. We were thoroughly impressed with the game when it launched back in mid 2020, saying: “Ooh, aah, that’s how it always starts, then later there’s running and screaming. Deep Rock Galactic can be deceptively easy going at times, right up until the swarms of bugs come crawling out of the inky darkness to besiege you and your friends. Who knew space dwarf mining could be so fun?” Of course, since then the game has gone on to receive numerous updates. Very recently, new weapons and a new game mode were added to Deep Rock Galactic alongside Ghost Ship’s take on the popular battle pass system.

New Horizon Forbidden West trailer reveals the Utaru and Tenakth tribes

A new trailer for Horizon Forbidden West has been released, delving into the tribes that Aloy will encounter in her new adventure when it releases for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on 18th February 2022. While one of the main selling points of the Horizon franchise is that it features super awesome robotic dinosaurs and creatures, its story all depends on the human characters that you meet. While Forbidden West will see the return of characters like Erend and Sylens from the first game, Aloy’s journey into new territories on the West Coast of North America will see her coming into contact with new tribes, some friendly, and some…. less friendly. The trailer delves into some of these peoples, from the border settlements of Carja and Oseram to the new tribes of Utaru in Plainsong and the clans of Tenakth. The trailer also gives us a look at some of the stunning scenery that Forbidden West will include. Just check out these screenshots. Horizon Forbidden West has just been revealed as one of the top games in our 2022 Most Wanted list, coming in at number 3. Read our thoughts on the upcoming PlayStation exclusive here. This new trailer comes just after we got our first glimpse of Horizon in VR. Sony confirmed the name of PlayStation VR2 yesterday, while also announcing their first exclusive game: Horizon Call of the Mountain. Who’s looking forward to popping a fancy hat on to truly enter Aloy’s world? Horizon Forbidden West will release on February 18th 2022, having missed its intended 2021 release target. As a cross-gen release for both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, Sony caused a bit of a stink when revealing their upgrade plans (or lack thereof), quickly U-turning to stick to the spirit of previous statements they had made to now offer free upgrades from PS4 to PS5. Great news for those stuck on the older generation during the current console shortages, as everyone that wants can pick up the game without worrying about future upgrade fees on this occasion. Rumour: The Last of Us PS5 remake will launch this year

Last year a report on Bloomberg detailed how one of Sony’s support-oriented studios, the Visual Arts Service Group, decided to go and remake The Last of Us for PlayStation 5, but without any support from Sony themselves. It was all very strange but allegedly ended with Naughty Dog taking back control of the project. At the end of last year the Visual Arts Service Group started hiring people, specifically asking for developers “with an appetite for high quality, 3rd person, action/adventure games.” Now, industry tipster Tom Henderson has tweeted “Heard from multiple people now that the TLOU remake is nearly finished and could release during the latter half of 2022.” He has also posted a video from Sony’s CES 2022 briefing yesterday that revealed more details of PSVR 2. Joel and Ellie can clearly be seen in the background. Other PlayStation icons including Ratchet & Clank, Aloy, and Jin are also pictured but Joel is certainly the odd one out, mostly because he’s very dead. It could be, but why on earth would we need a The Last of Us Remake anyway? Well there’s one very obvious reason – Sony release games on PC now. A PS5 version of The Last of Us would mean the graphics are good enough for a full price release on PC. Naughty Dog are, as far we know, still working on Factions, the multiplayer portion of The Last of Us Part 2 that was cut from the game’s release.  That could come to PC as well and having the original title to launch alongside it would be good marketing. At CES 2022 Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann did say “We’re dying to share with you the multiple game projects we have in the works at Naughty Dog.” There’s also The Last of US tv show out this year, launching the remake alongside that would also sell a lot of games. One other bit of TLOU news: Naughty Dog are looking for a a senior monetization/economy designer, perhaps hinting that Factions may be free-to-play. Source: Twitter

Far Cry 6 Pagan: Control DLC arrives next week

Far Cry 6’s Pagan: Control DLC will be launching on January 11th, Ubisoft has confirmed. The content will be the second piece of the Season Pass, following on from Vaas: Insanity. As the name suggests Pagan: Control will be based around Far Cry 4 villain Pagan Min, King of the Kingdom of Kyrat and Dragon Head of the Triad Empire. The content will delve into Pagan Min’s mind where he will confront his past and familiar faces. Pagan Min’s aim is to break away from his guilt and regrets in life. Stefan played through the Vaas: Insanity content, and wrote: “As for Vaas’ story, as someone whose first real experience with Far Cry came with the third entry, it’s nice to revisit the ever-so-memorable character. Yes, it’s obviously a play to the nostalgia that many people have for the game, but the way that Ubisoft frames it, plays with the events of Far Cry 3 and expands on Vaas’ story in various ways is enjoyable. It’s probably not essential – this isn’t going to transform any future playthroughs of Far Cry 3 – but it’s worthwhile for the diehard fans.” In our review for Far Cry 6, Gareth wrote: “Far Cry 6 feels like a sequel that was made because there needed to be a sequel, that’s making changes because it needs to show progress. The previous three numbered games in the series felt like they had their own identity and tried to offer more and more options to the player, but Far Cry 6 is a lateral move towards something that isn’t quite the Far Cry I originally loved.” Pagan: Control is the second of three pieces of DLC following Vaas: Insanity. Completing this trifecta of content will be Joseph: Collapse, and the will focus on Far Cry 5 villain Joseph Seed, the religious fanatic who set up the The New Eden cult. Source: Press Release

A Skull & Bones associate game director has left Ubisoft

An associate game director on Ubisoft Singapore’s long in development Skull & Bones has left the company. Antoine Henry announced his departure on LinkedIn last month with almost 15 years at Ubisoft under his belt. He said, “Goodbye Ubisoft! After nearly 15 years, today was my last day. I’m thankful for the people I’ve met and what they brought me professionally and personally. Hopefully I was able to give back a little bit.” The news (reported by VGC) has reminded us that Ubisoft is still trying to make Skull & Bones a thing, despite the game having been working its way through the nine circles of Hell since its first reveal. Antoine Henry’s departure might not have a significant effect on the game’s development. He held several different roles at the studio over the past seven years, working on Skull & Bones as Lead Game Designer from 2014-2017, then as Associate Game Director, where he shifted over to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla from 2018-2021, and then returned after the completion of The Siege of Paris expansion. In other words, he’s only had a fleeting role on the game since it was rebooted. The most recent news on the game’s overarching progress came in September 2020, with the company assuring wannabe pirates that the game was still in the works, but would have “a new vision“. Since then, it’s just been financial reports with Ubisoft disclosing that the Skull & Bons will  not ship during the 2021-22 fiscal year. So… late 2022 is technically still a possibility. Technically… The game was revealed at E3 2017 and was described as “naval combat is taken to the next level”. The original vision pitched a shared systemic world, where you can sail with other players or execute betrayals. There was a 5v5 mode called The Loot Hunt, and you can disguise your ship to evade detection. Each ship has a special abilities such as siege mode which has no limits on cannon fire when the vessel is anchored. If you’re facing a powerful foe you can invite other players in to the battle to even the odds. The game could obviously be very different now, with a recent report suggesting that it’s been pivoted to a live service game. Ubisoft’s statement explains that it was “necessary to have some fresh eyes join the team”, which happened two years ago, and that it’s expanded to be a global effort including the Ubisoft studios in Berlin, Chengdu, Kiev, Paris and the Philippines. It’s not just the game’s shifting direction and long development that has been in the spotlight, though. Ubisoft Singapore has also been implicated in the toxic workplace and harassment allegations that emerged in 2020 and reemerged in 2021 through reporting by Kotaku. This in turn saw the government’s Tripartite Alliance for Fair and Progressive Employment Practices open an investigation into the company. Source: LinkedIn via VGC
