MHIENG and MHIEC to Commence Demonstration Testing of Separation, Capture and Effective Use of CO2 from Waste-to-Energy Plant

TOKYO, Mar 17, 2022 - (JCN Newswire) - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering, Ltd. (MHIENG) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Environmental & Chemical Engineering Co., Ltd. (MHIEC) - two group companies of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), both based in Yokohama - are poised to commence demonstration testing of equipment for separation, capture and effective utilization of CO2 emissions from a local waste-to-energy (WtE) plant. The test program will be conducted together with the city of Yokohama and Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. The four parties recently signed a memorandum of collaboration, their collective goal set on realizing a carbon neutral society.


The demonstration testing, a joint undertaking by the private and public sectors, will integrate MHIEC and Yokohama's knowhow in the operation of WtE plants, MHIENG's high-performance carbon capture technology, and Tokyo Gas' expertise in hydrogen and carbon usage. The aim is to separate, capture and effectively recycle the mainly biomass-derived CO2 in the flue gas generated during the incineration of household waste.

Under this project, MHI Group's carbon capture technology will be applied at Yokohama's Tsurumi Waste-to-Energy Plant, which was originally built by MHIEC. MHIENG will design and manufacture the compact CO2 capture system based on its proprietary process technologies, and MHIEC will take charge of the equipment?s installation. The high-purity CO2 separated and captured from the flue gas will be transported to Tokyo Gas?s Yokohama Techno Station, located in Tsurumi-ku, Yokohama, where it will be used for a demonstration test of methanation that synthesizes methane gas through chemical reaction with hydrogen, as well as for research on direct use to industrial gas.

The project will be MHIENG's first application of its CO2 capture technology in a WtE plant. The equipment to be designed and manufactured is a compact CO2 capture system with a capture capacity of 0.3 tonnes per day (tpd), and it is applicable to various industrial facilities. It will further strengthen MHIENG?s product lineup as the company pursues increased applications of its carbon capture technologies to diverse emission sources and scales. For MHI Group, the project is significant in terms of providing a carbon negative solution responding to Japan?s decarbonization needs going forward: implementation of integrated carbon separation and capture from social infrastructure.

Mitsubishi Power Europe and Stockholm Exergi partner to deliver clean power and heat to the city of Stockholm

Duisburg, Jan 21, 2022 - (JCN Newswire) - Mitsubishi Power Europe has signed a contract with Stockholm Exergi, the largest local district heating, cooling and electricity provider, to modernise the combined heat and power (CHP) plant - Kraftvarmeverk 1 (KVV1) at Vartaverket, Stockholm.


Although the plant was originally built in 1976 for fossil fuels, Mitsubishi Power Europe will modernize the boiler to handle sustainable recycled fuels like bio-oil. The large-scale renovation involves automating the plant's control system to a modern distributed control system (DCS) and installing new low NOx burners to reduce nitrogen dioxide emissions. The project also includes repairing pressure parts, installing selected sub-systems, and upgrading critical components. The CHP plant will be fully commissioned during the heating period in 2023 following two scheduled outages during the summer months for retrofitting.

Stockholm Exergi contributes to increasing resource efficiency by using renewable or recycled energy sources; 99 per cent of the district heating is generated from renewable or recycled fuels. In addition, increased urban migration and seasonal temperature variations with more intense cold spells led to a gap in the demand and supply of electricity early in the year.

The renovation project will enable higher energy efficiency and local renewable electricity production. Both are key to achieving positive climate impact, while ensuring affordability and reliability of power. Since bio-oil generates considerably lower NOx, the boiler conversion along with low NOx burners will substantially reduce emissions. The integrated DCS will enhance plant efficiency and reliability, improve system availability and enable remote monitoring, control and reporting.

JERA and MHI Start a Demonstration Project to Develop Technology to Increase the Ammonia Co-firing Rate at Coal-fired Boilers

TOKYO, Jan 7, 2022 - (JCN Newswire) - JERA Co., Inc. ("JERA") and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. ("MHI") have received notice of acceptance of their grant application, under the Green Innovation Fund program of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization ("NEDO"), to conduct a project to develop and demonstrate a technology to increase the ammonia co-firing rate at coal-fired boilers (the "Project").

Ammonia enables efficient, low-cost transport and storage of hydrogen. In addition to this role as an energy carrier, it can also be used directly as a fuel in thermal power generation. As a fuel that does not emit carbon dioxide when burned, ammonia is expected to offer great advantages in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In order to achieve a decarbonized society, it is important to reduce CO2 emissions from thermal power generation by innovating to increase the co-firing rate of fuel ammonia.

This Project aims to develop an ammonia single-fuel burner suitable for coal-fired boilers and to demonstrate operation of the burner at actual boilers. The term of the Project is approximately 8 years from FY 2021 to FY 2028.

By FY 2024, JERA and MHI will develop a new burner capable of single-fuel ammonia combustion and draw up a master plan for equipment to demonstrate its use in actual boilers. Based on the results, the two companies will decide whether to install the burners at JERA's coal-fired boilers made by MHI. For the actual plant demonstrations, JERA and MHI plan to verify co-firing with at least 50% ammonia at two units with different boiler types by FY 2028.

Under its "JERA Zero CO2 Emissions 2050" objective, JERA has been working to reduce CO2 emissions from its domestic and overseas businesses to zero by 2050, promoting the adoption of greener fuels and pursuing thermal power that does not emit CO2 during power generation. JERA will continue to contribute to energy industry decarbonization through its own proactive efforts to develop decarbonization technologies while ensuring economic rationality.
