Iron Galaxy’s Brawler Royale Rumbleverse Delayed

Developer Iron Galaxy's free-to-play "brawler royale" Rumbleverse has been delayed, with no new release date announced just yet.

The game was revealed with a cinematic trailer at The Game Awards 2021 that set the perfect tone for what players could expect, after which curious fans had the chance to play the melee-focused battle royale in what Iron Galaxy billed as a "first look" play session. Rumbleverse was set to release on February 15 for PC and consoles, with Iron Galaxy also selling an early access bundle which would allow owners to start playing on February 8.

"Having Grapital City filled with Rumblers taught us a lot," Iron Galaxy writes in a blog post announcing the delay. "We're excited about the game we're making--and we're glad you are, too--but there's more we want to do to perfect the experience. More than a game, Rumbleverse will be a community that we want to support for a long time. We're going to take the time to make sure we can get that right."

Iron Galaxy is in the process of working with various platforms to refund players who may have purchased the Rumbleverse early access pack. While Iron Galaxy has not issued a new date for when fans can expect to see Rumbleverse resurface, an upcoming playtest on February 12 will allow PC players to take the game for another spin. Interested players need only add Rumbleverse to their wishlist on the Epic Game Store to sign up.

The full version of Rumbleverse, whenever it eventually releases, will include full cross-play support and feature a battle pass alongside the game's first season.

Splitgate Season 1 Adds New Modes And Custom Maps Today

Splitgate's first season officially begins today, January 27, as developer 1047 Games has revealed more of what players can expect in the latest update for the Halo-meets-Portal shooter. The biggest addition is a map maker for both PC and console that can be used in custom matches. Interestingly, these custom maps can also be co-designed with up to eight players, although there are limitations.

1047 Games stressed that for now the only way to share these maps is through hosting a custom lobby, but this mode will be further developed as the game continues to evolve. Capture the Flag and Evolution modes are also being added, with the CTF option featuring a stipulation that the flagbearer in each round cannot portal to an easy victory.

Evolution is a variation of Showdown and has a list of loadouts that get incrementally better as a match continues. Every time a team wins a round, the other side gets an upgraded loadout as part of a system to keep each encounter more interesting and dependent on skill.

You can expect a battle pass with 100 levels of unlockable cosmetic items and skins--some free, others part of a premium paid-for package--and on a technical level there'll be improvements under the graphical hood. Lastly, the Foregone Destruction map has been overhauled and will be joined later in the season by a simulation map titled Hotel. This level will be used for 3v3 games of Takedown, Evolution, and Showdown.

Splitgate has established itself as one of the best free-to-play games on the market right now, combining well-oiled gunplay with strategic portal combat. Even with games like Halo Infinite out now, Splitgate has continued to grow its audience and has even seen its PlayStation userbase increase after the release of Microsoft's Xbox console exclusive.

Mortal Kombat’s Ed Boon Joins Gaming Hall Of Fame

Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon is now a member of the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences' Hall of Fame. Boon is the 25th member of the Hall of Fame, joining other gaming legends such as Bonnie Ross, Todd Howard, Hideo Kojima, and the Houser brothers, among others.

Boon will receive the award in person at the 25th annual D.I.C.E. Awards ceremony at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas on February 24. Xbox Game Studios boss Matt Booty will present the award to Boon.

AIAS president Meggan Scavio said in a statement, "We are thrilled to have Ed be inducted into our Hall of Fame. From his early work on pinball machines to his monumental achievements co-creating the Mortal Kombat franchise, Ed's dedication and perseverance to the craft and art of games has left an incredible legacy for fans and game developers alike."

For his part, Booty--who met Boon when they both worked at Midway--said Boon "epitomized the best of what a game designer can be: big ideas, a great sense of humor, clear focus, and the ability to bring people together as a team."

Boon began his career at Williams Electronics as a programmer for pinball machines before moving into the field of video games. His first credit was 1990's High Impact Football. He would later go on to co-create the Mortal Kombat series, which is now one of the biggest and best-known gaming franchises on the planet. Boon, who now heads up NetherRealm Studios, is also known for his work on the Injustice fighting game series.

As for the awards themselves, Sony's Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart leads the way with nine total nominations, including a nod for Game of the Year. Check out the full rundown of categories and nominees for the 25th annual D.I.C.E. Awards here.
