Study Finds Potential for CBD Coronavirus Treatment

Date:

The COVID-19 crisis has impacted just about every person on the planet. Whether you or someone you know has been diagnosed with the virus or not, all of our lives have been altered in some way by the virus. Tens of millions of people are unemployed, many people are still under government mandated lockdowns, and some businesses have already been forced to shut for good. The virus has sent medical professionals and scientists alike racing to find a vaccine or at the very least some form of effective treatment. Previously unknown drugs are now household names due to some scientists and medical professionals floating them as potential treatments. In a surprising turn of events, a Canadian study has found promising evidence suggesting the potential for a CBD coronavirus treatment.

Potential CBD Coronavirus Treatment?

The study, which was released by online journal Preprints, found that certain “high-CBD cannabis sativa extracts” may play a role in limiting the damage done by COVID-19 by modulating expression of the ACE2 receptor that is found in the lungs as well as in, “oral and nasal mucosa, the kidneys, testes, and in the gastrointestinal tract.”

The study’s authors identified, “13 high CBD extracts that modulate ACE2 gene expression and ACE2 protein levels.” The results of the study, though incredibly limited in scope, are promising. When summing up the study, it’s authors state, “While our most effective extracts require further large-scale validation, our study is crucial for the future analysis of the effects of medical cannabis on COVID-19.”

Very Low Risk, Potentially High Reward

One of the most promising aspects of potentially including high-CBD cannabis as part of a treatment plan for COVID-19 patients is the incredibly low-risk involved with using high-CBD cannabis. No one has ever died from a cannabis overdose and CBD is touted by many for its anti-inflammatory properties.

While obviously a single study will only provide limited evidence that cannabis can inhibit expression of the ACE2 receptor that COVID-19 binds to, it is still encouraging. Due to the present health and economic dangers presented by the coronavirus crisis, any potential treatment, including high-CBD cannabis, must be studied to its full extent.
