Starlux launches flights to Singapore

Date:

Taiwan’s Starlux Airlines has announced that it will commence flights to Singapore from the carrier’s home base in Taipei this September. The announcement came shortly after Singapore decided to ease travel quarantine restrictions for passengers from Taiwan who test negative for COVID-19 upon arrival.

The current arrangements stipulate that travellers from Taiwan are not required to undergo 14-days of quarantine. However, travellers are required to show proof of vaccination and a negative COVID-19 PCR test upon arrival at Changi Airport. Although Singapore has opened up its borders with Taiwan, restrictions along Taiwan’s border remain in place, with entry into Taiwan being restricted to Taiwan nationals and residents.

From the 23rd of September, the airline will operate a twice-weekly service from Taiwan Taipei Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) to Singapore Changi Airport (SIN). The airline plans to operate these flights on Tuesdays and Thursdays initially, but the airline added that it hopes to offer three weekly flights from October, with one additional flight on Saturday.

The departure flight JX731 will depart Taipei at 9:20 local time and is scheduled to arrive in Singapore at 13:45 local time. The returning flight JX732 will depart Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) at 3:05 pm and is scheduled to arrive back in Taipei at 8:05 pm (local time).

Starlux will operate out of Changi Airport’s Terminal 1. Starlux business class passengers and elite COSMILE frequent flyer status holders will have access to T1’s SATS Premier Lounge. Starlux has already put tickets on sale, with an economy class fare starting from 8700 TWD (USD$312), while a business class fare is expected to cost around 20700 TWD (USD$745).

Starlux stated that this flight will operate by its brand new Airbus A321neo, which is configured with 8 lie-flat business class seats and 180 economy class seats. The airline will provide complimentary inflight Wi-Fi for all passengers; however, onboard Wi-Fi will not be available until the end of this year.

The Singapore Taipei travel corridor is one of Asia’s busiest air routes which means Starlux will face immense competition, including from Taipei’s EVA Airways, China Airlines and Singapore Airlines. To attract loyal customers of its competitors, Starlux is offering a two-year status match to its top Cosmile Explorer and Insighter tiers for frequent flyers holding the highest tier and the second-highest tier of its competitor’s frequent flyer program.

The launch of flights to Singapore is part of the airline’s plan to expand its network into the Southeast Asian market. The airline currently operates flights to Macau, Penang, Bangkok, Tokyo, Osaka, Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh, and Manila using an Airbus A321neo.
