Cybercriminals are doing their research and are aware of what’s popular, and what’s insecure. They are becoming more savvy and attacks are becoming increasingly more severe.

Malware threats are also becoming more sophisticated; in 2010 the Zeus botnet was designed to steal information during banking transactions and also expanded its scope by targeting mobile devices as well as launching email campaigns to spread the botnet. Other Malware, such as Stuxnet and Cutwail have also drawn attention. Analysis about Stuxnet revealed that it was created to sabotage power plants and cause physical damage to certain equipment; whereas Cutwail launched distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks and hit more than 300 major web sites.

Social media and networking sites continued to be a target in the third quarter of 2010 as well. AutoRun Malware and Koobface may have lessened their impact but will likely be a threat as long as individuals and businesses continue to use social media and networking sites.

Reports show that cybercriminals are becoming more savvy and attacks are becoming increasingly more severe. Cybercriminals are doing their research and are aware of what’s popular, and what’s insecure. They are attacking mobile devices and social-networking sites, so education about user activity online, as well as incorporating the proper security technologies are very important!
