South Australia’s Big VR Investment to Boost Road Safety

Avatar

The South Australian and Australian governments have joined hands with the South Australian Road Transport Association (SARTA). They will purchase the latest and innovative training simulator created to improve road safety in the region. The HVSim and software package costs $450000 and will let heavy vehicle operators virtually drive trucks in the South Eastern Freeway.

Michael McCormack, the Deputy Prime Minister, talked about the unique simulator and that it would aid existing heavy vehicle drivers to explore the South Eastern Freeway descent and focus on more safety behind the wheel.

Cover different high-risk routes

McCormack, also the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, and Regional Development, said that truck drivers would go through training and evaluations in the simulator. He further explained that there is scope to expand the virtual reality program and cover different South Australian and national high-risk routes.

Keep investing

McCormack further said that the government is very concerned about road safety as no family should face the devastation and aftereffects of road crashes. Hence, they will keep on investing in vital initiatives to enhance road safety, save lives, and also lower road trauma.

Better prepared

The Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative 2020 Grant program by The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (HVNR) allocated $350000 for the technology. Vincent Tarzia, South Australian Minister for Police, Emergency Services, Correctional Services, and Road Safety, said that the government would contribute $100000 more for the simulator to make sure the heavy vehicle drives are better prepared.

Learn or enhance skills

Tarzia further talked about the simulator and described it as a safe way for vehicle operators to learn or enhance their descent skills. Nearly 660000 heavy vehicles travel from Crafers to Glen Osmond every year. Tragic accidents have occurred in recent years at the end of the South Eastern Freeway. VR technology can help prevent such accidents and save more lives.

Prioritizing and increasing safety

Anne Ruston, the Senator for South Australia, said that prioritizing safety for road users was vital to embracing the National Road Safety Strategy. Senator Ruston described it as part of the government’s continuing commitment to enhance road safety and ensure zero fatalities and serious road injuries.

Sal Petroccitto, the NHVR CEO, said that the HVSI supported initiatives that contribute to bettering road safety through value-for-money and unique ideas. 26 Australian recipients were supported this year to present programs aiming for heavy vehicle safety. Petroccitto also said that this project’s results would lead to the road transport industry’s increased safety and sustainability.

Excellent way

Sharon Middleton, SARTA President, talked about the HVSim project and portrayed it as an excellent way to train on particular high-risk routes, that includes the SE Freeway and other problematic SA and interstate routes. Middleton said that the HVSim would allow training of heavy vehicle drivers, improving skills in areas like reversing trucks with various trailers and avoiding rollovers on sharp bends.

SARTA will also use the virtual reality system along with academic institutions to research vital areas like fatigue management. Middleton welcomed the Federal and SA Governments’ commitment to this critical safety project that they could not undertake without the governments’ combined $450000 grants.

Last year Aardman Animations and Fictioneers announced that beloved duo Wallace & Gromit would be making their way into augmented reality (AR). Today, Wallace & Gromit: The Big Fix Up has arrived for mobile devices so that players can help fix up the duo’s home town of Bristol, UK.

Providing a narrative-driven experience with AR gameplay, Wallace & Gromit: The Big Fix Up is their first new adventure in a decade. The iconic characters have started a new business venture, Spick & Spanners, and you’re the company’s new employee.

Wallace & Gromit: The Big Fix Up is voiced by award-winning British actors including Miriam Margolyes and Jim Carter with Ben Whitehead playing Wallace. The AR app can be used both at home or outside to aid the pair, with in-character phone calls, extended reality (XR) portals, and comic strips all part of the experience.

“We are really excited to launch The Big Fix Up, the first release from our new Fictioneers studio. We believe it’s a first-of-its-kind experience, part of our vision to harness multiple technologies, media types and formats to tell enhanced, collaborative and immersive stories in real-time,” said Scott Ewings, Venture Lead at Potato and co-founder of Fictioneers in a statement. “With The Big Fix Up, we have created a new, rich and multi-layered experience, where, for the first time ever, YOU can become part of Wallace & Gromit’s story. This will be the first of many releases using the Fictioneers platform.”

Wallace & Gromit have innovation, gadgets, and technology at the comedic heart of their world. Working with Fictioneers to create The Big Fix Up has been a perfect fit, allowing us to bring the duo’s fantastic fictional contraptions right into our audiences homes using the latest real technology,” adds Merlin Crossingham, Creative Director of Wallace & Gromit at Aardman.

Fictioneers is a collaboration between Potato, Sugar Creative and Tiny Rebel Games. The group used 3D mapping platform Fantasmo to bring Bristol’s city centre to life as well as Unity’s AR Foundation toolkit.

Wallace & Gromit: The Big Fix Up is freely available now on iOS and Android devices in the UK, US and Canada. For further updates from Fictioneers about its latest immersive content, keep reading VRFocus.

Crimedoor: A New Augmented Reality App that Allows People to Help Unravel the “Delphi Murder” Case

There is a sensational new app that lets people into some of the most baffling cold cases of the country. Crimedoor—the leading augmented reality app now recreates crime scenes that allow people to solve unsolved murder cases.

The app recently announced its collaboration with Kelsi German, the sister of the Delphi murder case victim Libby German. Libby, along with her friend Abby Williams, was murdered tragically in Delphi, Indiana in the year 2017. However, the case remained unresolved. Crimedoor, through their new partnership with Kelsi German, launches the Delphi Murder Crimedoor on their platform that lets users get into the crime scene via augmented reality. It is hoped that the venture will shed some new light on some unanswered questions related to the case.

The Delphi Murders

The Delphi Murders are one of the most notorious cold cases in the history of the nation. Despite the extensive efforts from law enforcement and over 26,000 tips received from the public, the case still remains unsolved. Even the cops retrieved a voice recording of the prime suspect and released it to the public, but with no luck. This is where Crimedoor comes into the picture. The augmented reality app developed by the husband and wife duo Lauren and Neil Mandt gives its users the opportunity to virtually enter the crime scene and investigate.

Solve the crime

The developers categorically stated that Crimedoor is not about celebrating killers. Rather, it is a platform to give a voice to the victims and their families. Their prime concern is to solve the crime. To this end, the developers give the utmost effort to recreate the crime scene with every possible detail. They hope that the technology of augmented reality will be pivotal in this regard.

Renewed attention

In their mission, Crimedoor has also partnered with Paul Holes, the famous cold-case detective who helped solve cases like Golden State Killer, Zodiac, and Jaycee Dugard cases. He said that his present purpose is to give the victims’ families a chance to attract renewed attention to their cases and bring closure. He hopes that the AR technology will become instrumental and may enable someone to identify the killer.

Unrestricted acces

Through Crimedoor, police, journalists, and the public alike will get unrestricted access to the crime scene with the help of the AR recreations of the photo evidence of the places. Detective Holes states that the AR technology will help revisit the crime scenes, and the spatial presence will be instrumental in gaining new leads. He also believes that AR technology will become instrumental in solving criminal cases in the future. He describes the value of the technology in solving cold cases as critical as the introduction of DNA.

Relevant evidence

Along with the augmented reality doors, the augmented reality app Crimedoor has included geo-location tags to identify cold cases across the world. Additionally, all of the profiles feature relevant evidence and supporting materials, including articles, videos, podcasts, images, and more—all stored in one place.
