Sources: MAD Lions accuses G2 of tampering, LEC owners pass vote 8-2 calling for reevaluation of global rules

Published

on

Ahead of the League of Legends offseason in November, MAD Lions has alleged tampering by G2 Esports and pushed for a vote in recent owners’ meetings asking Riot Games’ LEC office to lobby Riot’s global esports department to revise the global tampering and poaching rules, sources who participated in said meetings told Dot Esports.

Those meetings occurred on Sept. 2 and 3 and the vote passed 8-2, with G2 Esports voting “no,” according to sources. Vitality also voted “no,” arguing the current ruleset is not being properly enforced and amendments or changes to those rules should only come after proper enforcement of the existing poaching and tampering rules, sources said. MAD Lions and Vitality declined to comment. G2 Esports did not respond to a request for comment.

Riot said in a statement to Dot Esports today that no official complaint has been filed by any LEC team against another for tampering and that it is not currently investigating any allegations of poaching or tampering.

“There has been no complaint filed with the LEC, and there is no ongoing investigation against any LEC team on this topic,” a Riot spokesperson told Dot Esports. “With regards to the team owners’ meeting: those happen regularly and the topics that are discussed are confidential.”

The most recently published version of the Riot Games Global Penalty Index outlines two different statutes around tampering and poaching.

The first, if a player tampers with another player to recruit them to another team, carries a minimum suspension of five months with a maximum penalty of 10 months. Tampering allegations must be reported within six months of the alleged incident.

The second—if a player or coach solicits an offer of employment from another team while they are under contract without the expressed consent of their current team—results in a minimum of a three-month suspension and maximum of 15 months, and must also be reported within six months after the incident occurs.

The allegations of tampering come amid uncertainty within G2 of how it will proceed with the future of its League team after failing to qualify for the World Championship for the first time in five years. The team negotiated an additional contract year with mid laner Caps, extending his existing deal through November 2023. But it is also evaluating the future of top laner Wunder, bot laner Rekkles, support Mikyx, and head coach GrabbZ—all who remain under contract with the team but could land elsewhere in 2022.

Despite tension between the two, MAD has granted a tryout for G2 with its SuperLiga team AD carry Victor “Flakked” Lirola, sources familiar with those discussions said. G2 is also interested in bot laner Carzzy, who will compete with MAD Lions at the World Championship in October, prior to his current contract expiring in November. MAD recently reached a contract extension with support Kaiser, as reported by Dot Esports, but it has not completed an extension with Carzzy, and discussions between the team and player remain ongoing, according to Dot Esports’ Pablo Suárez

G2 was previously accused of tampering with players in two different instances in prior seasons.

The first instance occurred in 2016, when Origen alleged that then-G2 mid laner Perkz poached bot laner Zven and support Mithy, who’d later join G2, and that 10 to 15 European pro players participated in a secret group chat, according to a report at the time from Slingshot Esports. No penalty was levied against G2 or Perkz.

Other allegations levied in 2018 and made public in a report by VPEsports sparked a larger controversy. That report said Perkz tampered with top laner Odoamne, bot laners Hjarnan and Upset, and support Wadid. Shortly after that article published, however, the LEC denied it had received a formal complaint from any team in the league in a statement to The Shotcaller.

Here’s every MTG Innistrad: Crimson Vow mechanic

Published

on

Wizards of the Coast is expanding upon returning Magic: The Gathering mechanics within Innistrad: Crimson Vow while introducing three new ones.

Scheduled to digitally launch on Nov. 11 and globally on Nov. 19, Innistrad: Crimson Vow (VOW) will contain a total of six mechanics. The MTG set is a continuation of the events that happened during MID, centered around Olivia Voldaren’s wedding and the Gatewatch attempting to bring back daylight to the plane of Innistrad. The returning Magic mechanics are Day/Night, Disturb, and Exploit. The three new VOW mechanics are Blood Token, Cleave, and Training.

Returning MTG mechanics in VOW

Daybound and Nightbound will once again be a mechanic focused on werewolves featured in VOW. An upgraded version of Disturb will also return, featuring Double-Face cards with a creature on the front side and a variety of Magic types on the backside.

Daybound/Nightbound

The MTG mechanic Daybound/Nightbound, introduced in MID, will remain mostly exclusive to werewolves within the VOW set.

Disturb

Disturb returns to VOW with an upgrade to the MTG mechanic. Creatures with the Disturb mechanic in MID were Double-Faced cards with the backside featuring another creature type, primarily as spirits. Within VOW, creatures with Disturb have a backside with a variety of Magic types.

Dorothea, Vengeful Victim

The legendary creature Dorothea, Vengeful Victim, for example, returns to the battlefield upon paying the Disturb cost of 1WU as an Aura Enchantment called Dorothea’s Retribution.

Exploit

The Exploit mechanic was most recently showcased in Modern Horizons and first introduced into Magic via Dragons of Tarkir. Synergizing with sacrificial themes in both MID and VOW, a creature entering the battlefield gains the player or that creature a bonus for sacrificing an existing creature already on the battlefield.

Fell Stinger
Image via WotC

Fell Stinger is a VOW zombie scorpion with the Exploit mechanic, drawing two cards for its controller at the cost of two life points and sacrificing a creature upon entering the battlefield.

New Innistrad: Crimson Vow mechanics

A total of three new MTG mechanics are contained within VOW: Blood Token, Cleave, and Training.

Blood Token

Blood Tokens in VOW are the vampire mechanic, similar to how Day/Night is primarily the werewolf mechanic. Players can use these tokens to draw a card upon paying one, discarding a card, and sacrificing the Blood Token. Another option is to stack the Blood Tokens until at least five are obtained, providing a power-up to vampire creatures.

Voldaren Bloodcaster
Image via WotC

Voldaren Bloodcaster is a VOW creature who creates a Blood Token whenever another nontoken creature you control perishes or the vampire wizard herself is taken out. Upon having five Blood Tokens on the battlefield, Voldaren Bloodcaster transforms from a 2/1 with Flying into a 3/3 Flying vampire called Bloodbat Summoner.

Her transformation also includes an upside that turns a Blood Token you control into a 2/2 Bat with Flying and Haste at the beginning of combat on your turn.

Cleave

The VOW mechanic Cleave is only found on Instant and Sorcery spells. For an extra cost, Cleave removes any text on an Instant and Sorcery spell that’s in brackets.

Dig Up
Image via WotC

Dig Up, for example, is a Sorcery speed spell that allows a player to search for a basic land, reveal it, and then put it in their hand. When the Cleave cost is paid on Dig Up, players can find any card and don’t have to reveal it.

Training

Training is a new VOW mechanic that synergizes well with creature decks. When a Training creature attacks alongside another creature that has a power greater than it, its controller can place a +1/+1 counter on the creature with less power.

Savior of Ollenbock

Creatures with Training can also have other added bonuses, like Savior of Ollenbock. When the Savior of Ollenbock trains, it exiles up to one other target creature from the battlefield or from any graveyard. Upon leaving the battlefield, all exiled cards by the Savior of Ollenbock are returned to the battlefield under their owner’s control.

The six VOW mechanics were revealed during the Wizards of the Coast preview stream of the new MTG set. Any additional mechanics revealed prior to launch and updates to existing ones will be updated in this article when that information is released.

Every type of MTG Innistrad: Crimson Vow alternative art card style

Published

on

Alternative art card styles are returning to Magic: The Gathering within the upcoming Innistrad: Crimson Vow set, featuring a new showcase frame and the Dracula card style series.

Releasing globally on Nov. 19 and digitally on Nov. 11, Innistrad: Crimson Vow (VOW) focuses on vampires, with a wedding involving Olivia Voldaren as the story backdrop. Blood petals are featured throughout the artwork in VOW, flavorfully incorporating the power of blood and the new Blood Token mechanic.

Eternal Night showcase frames return, featured on all legendary creatures who aren’t vampires. Basic lands within VOW will also have the Eternal Night showcase art and Borderless lands return with the completion of Rare lands introduced within MID. Planeswalkers will have borderless art versions, along with a Fang card style version just for Sorin the Mirthless.

Every VOW vampire can have showcase Fang frames and there’s a special Dracula card style series that taps into traditional vampire folklore. Here are all of the set’s alternative art card styles.

VOW Fang frame

Showcase Fang frames can be found on every vampire within VOW, along with legendary ones. The frames are meant to show off the elegance and power that are associated with MTG vampires. Fang frames can be found on cards within Draft, set, and collector VOW booster packs.

VOW Dracula series

Similar to the Godzilla card styles found in IKO, a number of vampires within VOW will get alternative art cards from the new Dracula series. The text on a card is the same within the series, while the artwork pays tributes to all things Dracula. Some of the cards will also feature flavor text with quotes directly from Bram Stoker’s Dracula

Dracula series cards can be found as a box topper with a traditional foil treatment found in Draft, set, and collector booster displays. Non-foil and foil versions can also be found in collector booster packs.

Eternal Night frame

All legendary creatures within VOW that aren’t vampires will get an Eternal Night frame card style option, continuing on the gothic horror theme associated with the plane of Innistrad.

Here’s every MTG Innistrad: Crimson Vow spoiler from the preview stream

Published

on

Wizards of the Coast revealed a number of new Magic: The Gathering cards within the upcoming Innistrad: Crimson Vow set today that will release in November.

MTG spoilers revealed in the preview stream by WotC for Innistrad: Crimson Vow (VOW)—scheduled to globally launch on Nov. 19 and digitally on Nov. 11—ranged from legendary creatures and planeswalkers to vampires and humans with new mechanics. Olivia Voldaren’s wedding to Edgar Markov is the main focus of the story, with Sorin joining up with the Gatewatch to prevent it from happening.

Double-Faced vampires are included in the upcoming set and players can expect vampires in the MTG colors White and Blue. Alternative art was included in the VOW spoilers, along with the commander face cards for each preconstructed deck. And blood petals are depicted in a good amount of vampire art, providing flavor for the new Blood Token mechanic within the set.

From Olivia and Sorin to the completion of the Rare dual lands, here’s every VOW spoiler from the MTG preview stream.

Sorin the Mirthless

A total of three planeswalkers are in VOW: Sorin, Chandra, and Kaya. The only planeswalker card fully revealed during the MTG stream was Sorin the Mirthless.

Olivia, Crimson Bride

The centerpiece of VOW is Olivia Voldaren’s wedding, so it’s only natural that her legendary card—Olivia, Crimson Bride—was revealed during the preview stream.

Olivia, Crimson Bride also has a showcase fang border, as do all vampires in VOW, and has a Dracula Series alternative art style card.

Dual Rare lands

The five VOW Rare dual lands with enemy MTG colors join the allied color Rare dual lands from MID, with the borderless alternative art of the five lands revealed during the preview stream.

Blood Tokens can either draw cards or power up vampires like Voldaren Bloodcaster, who transforms into Bloodbat Summoner. In addition to becoming stronger upon transformation, Bloodbat Summoner also has an ability that creates a 2/2 Bat with Flying and Haste at the beginning of combat on your turn.

Dig Up

The card Dig Up highlights the VOW Cleave mechanic. Dig Up is a solid one-drop land fetcher in Green that can also grab any card when its Cleave cost is paid, adding value to Dig Up during the later stages of a match.

Savior of Ollenbock

Highlighting the Training mechanic in VOW was Savior of Ollenbock. The Savior of Ollenbock is a unique card in that players can exile creatures from their own graveyard and then destroy the Savior of Ollenbock to bring those creatures back onto the battlefield all at once. The human soldier can exile an opponent’s creature off the battlefield, similar to Brutal Cathar from MID, at the risk of it returning under the opponent’s control upon the Savior of Ollenbock getting destroyed.

Fell Stinger

Highlighting the returning MTG mechanic Exploit, Fell Stinger offers players the ability to draw cards by sacrificing a creature with Exploit upon entering the battlefield.

Dorothea, Vengeful Victim

In the case of Dorothea, paying her Disturb cost returns Dorthea’s Retribution, an Aura Enchantment.

Innistrad: Crimson Vow introduces new look for Olivia Voldaren

Published

on

Olivia Voldaren is attempting a power grab by marrying Edgar Markov to unite the most powerful vampire bloodlines in Magic: The Gathering’s upcoming set, Innistrad: Crimson Vow.

As one of the primary characters in the set, Olivia was sure to receive a powerful card. She’s making her third appearance in Crimson Vow.

Olivia debuted with Olivia Voldaren in 2011’s Innistrad. She returned in Shadows Over Innistrad five years later in 2016 as Olivia, Mobilized for War.

Olivia, Crimson Bride is the new, six-mana incarnation that’s a must-kill threat when she enters the battlefield.

Olivia, Crimson Bride

  • Mana value: 4BR
  • Type: Legendary Creature Vampire Noble
  • Rarity: Mythic Rare
  • Stats: 3/4
  • Keywords: Flying, Haste
  • First ability: Whenever Olivia, Crimson Bride attacks, return target Creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped and attacking. It gains “When you don’t control a legendary Vampire, exile this Creature.”

This card is a strong late-game play for R/B reanimator decks in Standard and other decks looking to use the graveyard for value. Olivia, Crimson Bride comes in as a 3/4 hasty threat with evasion. This already sets her apart as an effective attacker.

When Olivia attacks, you return a creature card from your graveyard tapped and attacking. Each turn, you could get an attacking body back. The creature card also can stick around for a long time. As long as Olivia sticks around, the reanimated creatures will remain on the battlefield.

If Olivia reanimates a legendary vampire, an opponent can kill Olivia and the reanimated creature will stick around. Look to pack a handful of legendary vampires to most effectively use Olivia’s attack ability.
