Sony Apparently Planning on Adapting Its Biggest IPs to Mobile

Here’s an unexpected bit of news: Sony is looking to enter the mobile gaming market — and they want to get started ASAP. Then again, their decision shouldn’t come as much of a surprise given just how much profit there is to be gained in this peculiar — but undeniably burgeoning — segment of the market.

So, how do we know this? Well, a recent job opening for Head of Mobile at PlayStation Studios spilled the beans. The job description tells the whole tale in surprising detail:

“Do you want to lead the development and strategy of mobile gaming and help shape the future of gaming for a world-class studio? As Head of Mobile, you will own and develop the mobile games strategy for PlayStation Studios and help build a foundation for future growth opportunities. You will lead all aspects of the expansion of our game development from consoles and PCs to mobile & Live Services with a focus on successfully adapting PlayStation’s most popular franchises for mobile. You will be responsible for building and scaling a team of mobile leaders and will serve as the Head of this new business unit within PlayStation Studios.”

Sony left nothing to imagination here. They seek someone who will take the reins and see that their biggest franchises are correctly transmuted onto mobile devices. That’s quite a big challenge. Sony isn’t the kind of company that would undertake it half-heartedly. They don’t want a fiasco on their hands and will surely approach this process with ultimate care and patience.

Plus, fans and gamers wouldn’t want a half-baked God of War or Uncharted on their mobile phones, something that was created as a cash grab without much depth. Fortunately, mobile gaming is quite a booming market. It’ll only continue to grow and develop over the coming months and years. And, even better, today’s most powerful gaming phones (and phones in general) are vastly more capable hardware-wise than most people realize.

You could, by all means, transfer over the entire God of War experience (for example) without losing much depth. The lack of physical controls would be an issue, but there are ways around this hurdle. If Riot Games could translate over a MOBA as complex and layered as League of Legends onto mobile — and pass the “test” with flying colors — then there’s no reason why Sony couldn’t do the same.

The Future

Mobile gaming is the future, whether we like it or not. It might not be the future any of us wanted, but it’s not without its perks either. If the world’s best developers put in the time and effort to create these mobile-centric gaming experiences from scratch — and not cut any corners in the process — then they can create staggeringly beautiful and surprisingly complex games. Most of which can run on even moderately powerful hardware.

The fact that Sony is looking to join in on the fun tells us that they’re well aware of just how big mobile gaming currently is and, perhaps more importantly, just how big it’ll become in the future. The hardware is already there — we need more developers on board. Most folks (the so-called “hardcore” bunch) are still battling the stigma of mobile gaming, but as time goes on, it’s becoming harder and harder to resist its allure.
