Sonic Origins Plus announced, adds playable Amy and Game Gear titles

Date:

On March 23, Sega officially announced Sonic Origins Plus, an updated rerelease of the Sonic Origins collection that came out last year. This new version introduces quite a bit of content into the mix, with some of it having been requested by fans for a while now. Notably, the original Sonic Origins release received criticism from fans not only for certain missing features but also for a litany of bugs and other unpolished elements that did not exist in the initial Genesis releases. With this rerelease, the developers have a major opportunity to correct these mistakes and make Sonic Origins a much more appealing collection overall.

For many classic Sonic fans, the addition of Amy Rose as a playable character in all four of the included Genesis games will no doubt stand as the key selling point of Sonic Origins Plus. This does not mark her first playable appearance in a 2D Sonic game, as that honor goes to her appearances in the Sonic Advance trilogy. However, Sonic Origins Plus does mark the first time that any of the classic 2D Sonics made her playable. So far, Sega has not delved into what makes Amy’s playstyle unique from the other characters. But we do know that she, unsurprisingly, uses her trademark Piko Piko Hammer.

Any other new features?

Additionally, this updated collection adds a whopping 12 Game Gear titles for fans and newcomers to try. These titles include the following:

  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
  • Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble
  • Sonic Spinball
  • Tails’ Sky Patrol
  • Sonic Blast
  • Sonic Drift
  • Sonic Drift 2
  • Tails Adventure
  • Sonic Chaos
  • Sonic Labyrinth

In addition to all this, Sega announced that Sonic Origins Plus will incorporate a playable Knuckles into Sonic CD. This addresses one of the more common criticisms levied at the original Sonic Origins collection. Fans can get a hold of Sonic Origins Plus once it comes to digital store shelves on June 23.
