SKY takes delivery of first Airbus A321neo

Date:

Chilean low-cost carrier, SKY Airline (SKY) has taken delivery of its first Airbus A321neo on a long term lease from Los Angeles based aircraft lessor, Air Lease Corporation. The Chilean low-cost airline also has another two A321neos on order and according to Air Lease Corporation, this aircraft will also be the first of its type to operate commercially in Chile.

SKY also takes delivery of the Airbus A321neo ahead of one of its major competitors in Chile, LATAM Airlines, which currently is awaiting delivery of its first A31neo which is scheduled to be delivered later this year. According to Airbus, the new A321neo will be powered by two CFM Leap-1A engines and is configured in a two-class cabin layout which can accommodate up to 238 passengers.

Airbus also added that the carrier is the first airline in South America “to operate the Airbus A321neo with the high-density cabin configuration.” Other South American carriers that operate the A321neo, but in its low-density configuration of around 220 seats include Avianca and Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras.

In a company press release, the Assistant Vice President of Marketing at Air Lease Corporation, Matthew Stevens stated “It is a privilege to work with SKY, and we believe this next-generation aircraft will positively contribute to the airline’s sustainability and fleet operations.”

SKY has been an Airbus customer since 2010 and became an all-Airbus operator in 2013. In terms of the low-cost carrier’s fleet, SKY currently has a total fleet of 21 Airbus aircraft which includes 19 Airbus A320neos. As the A321neo aircraft shares a common type rating with the Airbus A320 family, this means pilots will not be required to undergo additional training in order to operate the aircraft.
