SKY express aquires six ATR 72-600 aircraft

Date:

The Greek airline, SKY express has announced that it has signed a purchase agreement for a total of six ATR 72-600 turboprops with aircraft manufacturer ATR. According to Toulouse-based aircraft manufacturer, this new purchase agreement is “an important step in the airline’s fleet development plan.”

SKY express has actually already received its first ATR 72-600, which was delivered to the Greek carrier at the end of June. SKY express President of the Board of Directors, Theodoros Krokidas stated that the “ATR aircraft are well suited to serving islands with their ability to take-off and land from runways other aircraft simply cannot access and this is essential for regional operations in a country such as Greece.”

Now that SKY express has successfully received its first aircraft, ATR hopes to deliver the remaining five ATR 72-600 aircraft before the end of the year. The aircraft manufacturer also stated that once all of these aircraft are delivered, “SKY express will operate the youngest ATR fleet in Europe,” with its passengers set to benefit from these new turboprop aircraft for many years to come.

In a company statement the Chief Executive of ATR, Stefano Bortoli said “We are proud when an airline chooses ATR aircraft for their fleet renewal, as moving from the -500 to the -600 series shows the value of our continuous development policy. SKY express will benefit from the latest-generation upgradeable avionics suite and its passengers will enjoy a modern, comfortable cabin.”

The ATR 72-600 is also the ideal type of aircraft for a country like Greece, which is made up of a number of islands with short runways. According to ATR, this particular aircraft burns up to 40% less fuel and emits up to 40% less CO2 than a comparable regional jet and is the “sustainable benchmark” when it comes to regional turboprops on the market.

In a company statement, the CEO of the IOGR Group of companies (which SKY express is a part of), Ioannis Grylos said “In today’s context, it is more important than ever before to be able to offer our passengers efficient and flexible solutions with the best possible standards of comfort and safety.” The Chief Executive added that the airline’s ATRs will “support the Greek tourism industry and help reboot the Greek economy.”

In addition to its only ATR 72-600, SKY express also has a fleet of six Airbus A320neos, five ATR 72-500s and five ATR 42-500s. The Greek airline currently operates one of the largest flight networks in the country and now serves a total of 48 destinations in 9 countries and plans to continue expanding this flight network over the coming months.
