At a time when bitcoin has barely reached everyone’s ears, professional skateboarder Tony Hawk was already exploring its massive potential way back in 2012. 

Hawk shared his experiences at “Bitcoin 2021,” the world’s largest Bitcoin event, which was held in Miami, California. 

Speaking at the fireside chat titled “Countercultures Go Mainstream,” he said that cryptocurrencies have risen to popularity at a much faster rate than skateboarding.

At the event, his testimony revolved around the seamless connections between skateboarding and cryptocurrency, which, at first glance, seems to be unrelated at all. 

Doing what he loves

Hawk also said that “If you’re doing something you truly love, you’re not truly working.” He is referring to his experiences with skateboarding and cryptocurrencies. 

According to him, the fulfillment he gets from his cryptocurrency ventures is comparable to what he is experiencing at skateboarding. 

Hawk said that he was inspired to purchase his first bitcoin after learning it from Silk Road, which was an online black market for buyers and sellers of illegal items. 

Future of money

This online marketplace was so big back then that it reached a point where it was processing $200 million worth of transactions. But the U.S. government found out about this underground market and permanently shut it down in 2013. 

Hawk said that through this marketplace, he learned that bitcoin could serve as a payment option and as a means of exchange. Back then, he already recognized it as the future of finance.

He also added that he had not sold any of the bitcoins he has bought; in fact, he had donated four of his coins to an organization way back in 2012.
