Gov. Steve Sisolak has proposed pardoning thousands of people convicted of possessing small amounts of marijuana before Nevada legalized cannabis.
Sisolak placed a resolution to consider the proposal on the agenda for Wednesday’s meeting of the Board of Pardons Commissioners.
“The people of Nevada have decided that possession of small amounts of marijuana is not a crime,” Sisolak said in a statement. “If approved, this resolution will clear the slate for thousands of people who bear the stigma of a conviction for actions that have now been decriminalized.”
In 2016, Nevadans voted to legalize the recreational use of marijuana through a ballot initiative, authorizing possession of less than an ounce of cannabis.
The governor’s proposed resolution would unconditionally pardon individuals previously convicted of possession of an ounce or less of marijuana, not for purpose of sale.
The Nevada Board of Pardons Commissioners has the statutory authority to pardon or otherwise grant clemency to individuals for prior criminal convictions.
The board is comprised of the governor, the justices of the state Supreme Court and the state attorney general.
