Singapore Airlines unveils new narrowbody cabin for 737 fleet

Date:

Singapore Airlines (SIA) recently unveiled its new cabin product which will be rolled out across the airline’s Boeing 737-8 fleet over the coming months. According to the flag carrier, all of its Boeing 737-8 aircraft will be retrofitted with a total of 154 new seats consisting of 10 business class seats and 144 economy class seats.

Singapore Airlines’ lie-flat business class seats have been designed by London-based Factorydesign and manufactured by Thompson Aero Seating. The seats are arranged side-by-side in a 2-2, 1-1, 2-2 configuration. Singapore Airlines have described the individual seat as a “throne,” as it provides additional privacy and extra storage space. All 10 business class seats are up to 22 inches wide and can convert into a comfortable 76-inch flatbed seat.

Earlier this year, SIA inherited the Boeing 737-8 from its defunct regional subsidiary SilkAir and has invested about S$230 million (U$ 170 million) in the development, design, and installation of the new cabin products. The airline hopes that these new features will help elevate customer experiences onboard the airline’s narrow-body aircraft to a level similar to that of its wide-body aircraft.

“we can now offer customers a premium travel experience across our entire full-service network, no matter how long or short their journey.”

Lee Lik Hsin, Executive Vice President Commercial for Singapore Airlines

The carrier’s economy class seats have been manufactured by Collins Aerospace and have a contoured backrest for better support and a four-way adjustable headrest with folding wings. Each seat also comes with an integrated USB charging port and personal 10-inch high-definition touch-screen monitor.

Singapore Airlines added that it has installed Panasonic’s X-Series inflight entertainment system on its Boeing 737-8 fleet. This means passengers to enjoy “the latest entertainment content from SIA’s Kris World inflight entertainment system.”

SIA has also equipped its new Boeing 737 narrowbody cabin with Panasonic’s inflight Wi-Fi service. According to the flag carrier, it offers a variety of “next-generation connectivity benefits,” from high-speed internet connectivity to streaming capabilities.

After more than two years on the ground, Singapore Airlines stated that it expects to return the Boeing 737 MAX 8 to service by the end of this year. Back in March 2019, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) like many aviation safety regulators grounded the Boeing 737 MAX following two fatal air accidents involving the aircraft type

However, it wasn’t until September of this year that the CAAS finally lifted its suspension of the Boeing 737 MAX. After thoroughly reviewing the design changes made to the aircraft and its safety record over the past nine months and finding no significant safety issues, the national safety regulator signed off on the aircraft for flights to and from Singapore.

Singapore Airlines currently has 6 Boeing 737s that were previously operated by SilkAir. The airline has ordered 25 more Boeing 737 MAX 8s and is expected to receive 8 more Boeing 737 MAX 8s by March 2022. The airline also stated that the rebranded Boeing 737s will progressively return to service on short and medium-haul flights across the airline’s network, including Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei.
