Should I Give My Pet Pot? A Closer Look at CBD for Pets

Date:

CBD for pets, is it a good thing, or not? Although this article has some very good points, do your due diligence and research this topic before making a decision. CBD for pets can be a phenomenal thing, but your particular pet will most likely have its own personal needs. This is a question you can bring to your vet. The veterinarian may or may not give you an answer depending on the laws of your state so If your vet won’t answer you, ask your doctor. The more you become educated in the truth about CBD, the better off you will be. Do not be led astray by false claims that may cause you, and your pet problems in the end. As for giving your pet “pot,” well as fun as it sounds it may not be a good idea.

What Exactly is “Pot?”

Pot is a slang term for marijuana. Pot, weed, dank, skunk, Mary Jane…the list could go on and on. Pot has many names, but it all boils down to one thing. It is a cannabis plant in the same family as hemp that is very popular because it contains tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC. THC is the driving force that causes the almighty high that all stoners seek. Plain and simple, “pot” is marijuana. Although there are many people out there that think it is fun to blow a big cloud of smoke filled with THC into the face of their pet, it can cause serious harm. However, there is good news…

CBD For Pets is Not Pot

CBD for pets is not pot. There are many misconceptions about CBD and the role it plays in the marijuana arena. Cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD, is a compound within the hemp plant. Although hemp and marijuana have a couple of million things in common, they are not the same. They belong to the same genus family, cannabis. In fact, Cannabis sativa L, which is marijuana, is the base plant that hemp started from. Over time and many years cross-breeding created the hemp plant that we know today. CBD comes from the hemp plant, not the marijuana plant. The highest amount of THC that appears in the hemp plant is .03%. That means three one-hundredths of a percent. If you compare to marijuana, which can have up to 30% THC it is easy to see that the content of THC within the hemp plant is very minimal. This leads to our next tidbit of good news…

CBD Does Not Get Pets High

It may be a relief to know that if you give your cat or dog a dose of CBD they will not get stoned and raid the refrigerator or embarrass you in front of the family. However, anything is possible. If they were to consume a couple of hundred pounds of CBD it might impair them. You never know. It is safe to assume if you go by the directions and use the correct dosage for your pet, they won’t end up inebriated. Although CBD and THC are both present in the plant, they are two different compounds and neither one of them contains the other. However, it may help to consider the different types of CBD for pets that exist.

Full Spectrum CBD For Pets

Full-spectrum CBD tinctures and oils are solutions that contain over 100 cannabinoids including THC. The science behind this is that the product is able to bring a wide range of compounds into the dose that may add more wellness properties. If you decide to use a full-spectrum product for your pet, be aware that there will most likely be up to .03% of THC within each dose. Depending on the particular needs of your animal it might be better to use a CBD isolate that contains zero THC.

Isolate CBD Tinctures

Isolate CBD tinctures are made from pure cannabidiol and have no THC whatsoever. This, of course, means that there will not be any of the other cannabinoids or terpenes present either. If you are concerned about the presence of THC, the best way to make sure that there is a note in your oil or tincture is to make sure it is an isolate. Keep in mind that although there is a popular belief that CBD is a miracle compound that fights against many ailments known to men and pets, there is not enough scientific proof to justify the claims. However, conducting studies and gathering evidence takes time so don’t give up.
