Sega announced plans to create something it’s calling a “Super Game,” during an earnings call this week. The company said the game would take between three and five years to create and would be an FPS made by a European studio, but provided few details about the game itself.
Sega already has its European studio Creative Assembly working on an unnamed new sci-fi FPS, and it’s possible that’s the super game in question. Creative Assembly has previously described its take as offering a “fresh take on the FPS genre that will allow players to embrace a variety of creative playstyles.”
Sega’s revenue predictions show the company expects this game to reach lifetime sales of around $900 million.
Sega isn’t the only company looking to up the ante on how much can be spent on a video game. Microsoft’s The Initiative studio, opened in 2018, described itself as the first quadruple A game studio. These terms are just marketing noise, and although they’re descriptive of the spending behind the games, they say very little about how those games will turn out. For every blockbuster spender that pulls in money hand over fist, there are a dozen that crash and burn.
Sega’s earnings call revealed a serious drop in earnings for the financial year ending March 31, 2021. The company pulled in 27.7 billion yen, down 24% from the year before. Operating income dropped even more steeply, from 27.6 billion yen to 6.55 billion — a 76.3% decline.
Sega attributed the drops to the COVID-19 pandemic. Where several other games companies saw huge surges in games spending, Sega was hurt by the shuttering of pachinko halls across Japan, as it makes a significant amount of its money through those halls. But as COVID vaccines roll out and restrictions are lifted, the company expects those businesses to recover.
