San Diego Padres and Motorola Partner for AR Fan Experience

Date:

After their recent multi-year jersey patch partnership, Motorola and San Diego Padres are teaming up again. The San Diego Padres baseball team fans now have one more reason to be excited. The Major League Baseball club and the telecommunications company worked together on a unique AR fan experience.

The Motorola Hall of Fame augmented reality experience was built with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Spaces™ XR Developer Platform, motorola edge+, and Lenovo ThinkReality A3 AR glasses.

Technology and Sports Go Hand in Glove in the New AR Fan Experience

The multiplayer demo game developed by Motorola in collaboration with AR design agency Rock Paper Reality will allow fans to enter a virtual model of Petco Park, and test their baseball skills.

“…The Padres and Motorola are teaming up again to pioneer an immersive AR experience for our fans to enjoy at the Padres Hall of Fame,” the San Diego Padres CEO, Erik Greupner, said in a press release shared with ARPost. “Fans will have the opportunity to feel the thrill of being on the field at Petco Park, America’s Number 1 ballpark.”

Between two and four players can join a multiplayer game in a virtual model of Petco Park, aiming baseballs at various targets situated all over the ballpark.

Building the Future of Sports as Immersive Experience

The AR fan experience for San Diego Padres indicates a new trend in the world of sports. Fans no longer want to be passive spectators. They really want to be part of the game. And, as Motorola, its parent company Lenovo, and Rock Paper Reality prove, this is possible.

“Many of us dream of being able to step on the field and play ball with our favorite team and players, and through the innovative technologies between Motorola, Lenovo, and Qualcomm, we’re making that dream a reality,” said VP and General Manager, North America at Motorola, Rudi Kalil.

As for Rock Paper Reality, building the AR fan experience for the San Diego Padres was a huge opportunity to showcase their strengths.

“Our goal was to push the possibilities of AR on Lenovo’s ThinkReality A3 headset, the motorola edge+, and Snapdragon Spaces in a fun way that brought Padre’s Hall-of-Famers to life,” said CTO of Rock Paper Reality, Preston Platt. “Based on users’ faces while immersed in the game, I believe we succeeded.”
