Running an office PC creates 12.5kg CO2 emissions each month…

Running an office PC creates 12.5kg CO2 emissions each month… Research conducted by Sitebulb as part of the company’s ‘climate positive’ campaign reveals that running an office PC creates 12.5kg CO2 emissions each month, and the business is encouraging those that are heavy computer users to consider ways they can offset their emissions.

How often do you stop to think about the CO2 emissions that come with using your computer all day every day?

Never, is most likely the answer.

With more of us working from home or on our computers day-in-day out, we’re producing CO2 emissions as a result of this, often without even considering the environmental impact that our teams computer usage is having.

As part of it’s ‘climate positive’ campaign, Sitebulb has released research into the environmental impact of running computers as a business and can reveal that:

  • A PC produces, on average, 12.5kg CO2 emissions each month
  • A laptop produces, on average, 3.96kg CO2 emissions each month

In a bid to get companies to think about the emissions their business is producing, here’s what the total emissions for different numbers of computers looks like:

  • 10 desktop computers: 125kg CO2 emissions each month
  • 5 desktop computers & 5 laptops: 82.3kg CO2 emissions each month
  • 10 desktop computers & 10 laptops: 164.6kg CO2 emissions each month
  • 25 desktop computers: 312.5kg CO2 emissions each month
  • 25 laptops: 99kg CO2 emissions each month
  • 50 desktop computers: 625kg CO2 emissions each month
  • 50 laptops: 198kg CO2 emissions each month

What is Sitebulb’s Climate Positive Campaign?

We’re currently in a global climate crisis, and Sitebulb strongly believes that businesses have a responsibility to do something about it. Like every business, there is an opportunity to have an impact on the environment and their baseline for being more sustainable is to ensure that their own workforce is ‘climate positive’.

But to go beyond this, the business has acknowledged that Sitebulb is responsible for a wider carbon footprint. Their auditing software is used by SEOs around the globe and each audit they run uses energy via their computer and has an environmental impact. This can be offset by funding environmental projects.

Patrick Hathaway, Co-Founder of Sitebulb, comments:

“Gareth (our Director of Development and co-founder) already does a load of work to squeeze more performance out of the tool – making it use fewer resources on your machine, so it’s more efficient. We’ve also been working on improvements to the auditing workflow, so our users can get the information and insights they need, but without having to pull superfluous data.”

“But this new initiative goes above and beyond that, and says: ‘ok we know that when someone is using Sitebulb, it consumes resources’. And we know that it has a bigger impact than typical software because it’s doing a ton of complex processing. So rather than trying to calculate the exact amount of energy Sitebulb uses, if we offset the cost of using your computer at full whack, every day for a year, we are going to offset the cost of using Sitebulb, and then some!”

Geoff Kennedy, Head of Marketing at Sitebulb, continues:

“This all started as an initiative to do some good for the environment, and give back to our existing customers. But we soon realised that there was potential to take it even further and integrate it into a lot of what we do as a business, including our marketing. If I can incentivise people to try out our tool by planting trees, that makes a lot more sense just paying for an ad somewhere.”
