Resolution Games closes $25M Series C funding round to dedicate more to existing titles and deliver additional live VR games

July 14, 2021 – Resolution Games, a Virtual Reality (VR) games studio known for titles including Demeo, Blaston, Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale and others, has today announced it has closed a Series C funding round of USD $25 million, bringing the company’s total funding to USD $38.5 million.

The round was co-led by Qualcomm Ventures LLC and BITKRAFT Ventures, followed by Knutsson Holdings AB. Prior investors who also took part in the round included GV, MizMaa, GP Bullhound, Partech, Creandum, Initial Capital, Bonnier Ventures and Sisu Game Ventures.

“Six years ago, Resolution Games was one of the first studios focused on VR and AR [Augmented Reality]. We’ve learned a lot, worked in a time with limited technology, survived a small market, and have continued to think big-picture and long-term,” said Tommy Palm, CEO of Resolution Games. “We see vast potential in VR and that the market is maturing. We want to up the game and standard for quality to ensure VR users have the best possible experience, and that VR games not just meet – but surpass – the potential from what we’ve seen on other platforms like PC and console.”

Resolution Games stated that it has seen a desire from communities for live games. As a result, the studio plans to dedicate more resources to ongoing development of existing titles as well as delivering additional live games. According to the company, which already has more than 100 employees internationally, the latest infusion of capital will allow Resolution Games to accelerate growth as the industry model shifts toward games as a service (GaaS), which requires larger teams to support games post-launch with live-ops teams.

Resolution Games also announced today that Boaz Peer, Senior Investment Director at Qualcomm Ventures Europe and Israel at Qualcomm Israel Ltd., will join the studio’s board of directors, and Malte Barth, founding general partner of BITKRAFT Ventures, will be a board observer.

“The VR market is growing at an accelerated pace, and we expect this trend to continue in the next few years,” said Peer. “Resolution Games has demonstrated it can create world class IP, compelling immersive experiences and has shown great leadership across the market. We are excited to invest in Resolution Games to support the growth of superior mobile VR and AR experiences.”

Barth added: “From spearheading super-close, slow-speed dueling in VR to giving gamers a lifelike tabletop dungeon crawler experience in VR, Resolution Games has developed groundbreaking games both in terms of genres and gameplay. The company’s vision around VR multiplayer casual and competitive gameplay is truly groundbreaking, and we are excited to work with Tommy and his seasoned team to support the next level of growth as the studio continues to bring highly immersive and engaging VR and AR experiences to the world.”

The studio’s funding announcement comes on the heels of the launch of its RPG dungeon crawler VR game, Demeo, which has already surpassed the multi-million dollar mark in revenue. To learn more about Resolution Games, visit the company’s website

Surgical Science to acquire 3D Systems’ Simbionix business to strengthen its VR medical simulation offering

In Virtual Reality News

July 28, 2021 – 3D Systems, a manufacturing solutions partner, has today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to sell its medical simulation business, Simbionix, to Surgical Science Sweden AB, a supplier of virtual reality (VR) simulators for medical training, for a purchase price of USD $305 million. The sale action, which is subject to customary closing conditions and adjustments, will complete 3D Systems’ initiative to divest its non-core businesses.

“Over the last several months, 3D Systems has divested a number of assets that are not core to our industry-leading additive manufacturing solutions business,” said Dr. Jeffrey Graves, President & CEO, 3D Systems. “The final of these is our Simbionix business, under the leadership of Ran Bronstein, which has secured a strong position in the medical simulation, training and robotic surgery market. As the Simbionix team now joins forces with Surgical Science, I believe their future will be even brighter, with increased scale and an ability to leverage the core strengths of both businesses in a growing medical simulation market.”

The proceeds from the sale, combined with previously announced divestitures, will leave 3D Systems with a cash balance of approximately USD $500 million and no debt, according to the company, which has reorganized into two business units – Healthcare and Industrial Solutions. The company added that for 2020, Simbionix reported sales of USD $40.8 million, and that it expects completion of the Simbionix transaction to occur in August 2021.

As a result of the transaction, Simbionix will be integrated with Surgical Science to expand the company’s offering in the medical simulation market. Surgical Science anticipates that the acquisition of Simbionix will complement and strengthen its position in the market, where it can offer a broad portfolio of simulators in areas such as general surgery, endovascular procedures, endoscopy, urology, orthopedics, ultrasound, and robotic surgery. According to 3D Systems, Simbionix also brings long-established collaborations with medical technology companies and academic institutions that are developing new robotic surgery technology and operating procedures.

Hologate X Takes Free-Roam VR To The Next Level

Published

on

The popular location-based VR provider has revealed a new free-roam VR platform alongside a new 4D multiplayer experience.

With over 400 VR systems located across 35 countries and a total of seven million players worldwide, Hologate is easily one of the largest location-based VR entertainment networks in the world.

Now the company is raising its already impressive standards even higher with the announcement of Hologate X, a free-roam VR platform that uses Hologate Xperience Reality (HXR), a hyper-realistic location-based VR arena that blends cutting edge VR technology with full-body motion tracking and 4D physical effects to offer visitors high-fidelity immersive experiences.

On top of HXR, Hologate X will also feature hyper-reality streaming technology, a first for any location-based VR experience. What this will do is stream high-res cinematic experiences directly into your VR headset as you freely explore an ever-expanding gameplay space, no bulky VR backpack required.

Not only does this technology reduce the overall costs that come with installing a typical free-roam VR system—most venues feature two backpacks per player (live backpack and backup)—but it also reduces turnaround times by eliminating the need to swap out backpacks when the battery runs low, offering more continuous play while increasing a venue’s revenue.

The first title for Hologate X will be SIGVRIED: Escape from Valhalla, an in-house developed VR experience based on a Nibelungen Saga. Blending Norse mythology with futuristic sci-fi elements, this unique experience takes place in an alternate reality after the cataclysmic events of Ragnarök. Upon arriving in this strange new world, you’ll explore the demolished and vast ‘fortress of the gods’, Vahalla. Here you can search the crumbling ruins, dark corridors, and various chambers for hidden treasures.

But beware, danger lurks everywhere! To survive your journey and possess the treasures of the Nibelungs, you and other players must work as a team to unravel puzzles, bypass traps, and battle dragons. SIGVRIED: Escape from Valhalla is more than just a collaborative VR experience. It’s an interactive sci-fi fantasy adventure that combines the feel of classic RPGs with the excitement and intrigue of modern escape rooms.

In an official press release, Hologate CEO and Founder Leif Petersen said, “Our formula of the latest in VR technology with high-fidelity VR streaming, perfectly staged 4D effects such as scents and wind, THX 5.1 surround within the platform and positional inside of the headset audio mix, and fantastical lifelike adventures will catapult players directly into the action.”

“All senses are further activated by tactile props and full-body haptics which will further convince the players they have been truly transported into another dimension.”

Hologate X and HXR will make their debut in Fürth, Germany during Hologate’s new ultimate experience venue HOLOGATE WORLD, which is expected to open in September 2021, with other Hologate X venues opening up worldwide shortly thereafter.

To learn more, you can check out the Hologate website or stay connected with the Hologate newsletter. Funding for SIGVRIED: Escape from Valhalla was supported by a German federal games grant provided by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) and had a total production budget of 1.2 million euros ($1,415,274 US).
