Meet the woman behind two large projects that will transform the heart of one of the country’s oldest city centres.
Vanessa Carswell, a principal architect with Jasmax based in Christchurch, is involved in the design of both the George St project, and the health and education precinct masterplan, called Te Whakaari (The Promise).
The latter involves the spaces around the new $1.4 billion Dunedin hospital, and includes creating new green spaces, additional education and healthcare facilities, and recreation areas.
Carswell had worked in Dunedin ‘‘on and off’’ for over a decade on projects involving the likes of Otago University, Port Otago, Otago Regional Council, Otago Polytechnic, ACC and Ngāi Tahu Property.

The health and education precinct, coupled with the George St makeover, would ‘‘be the sort of activity that Dunedin hasn’t really seen before,’’ she said.
Dunedin presented some unique challenges, the CBD was nestled between the surrounding hills and harbour, and featured a one-way system.
