Raytracing & DLSS Enhance The Persistence This Week

Published

on

We’re starting to see more virtual reality (VR) titles make use of NVIDIA’s DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) technology which began last month with the likes of No Man’s Sky and Into the Radius. At the end of this week another will be added to that list, Firesprite’s procedural horror The Persistence. In doing so players will also gain access to an experimental feature, ray-traced reflections.

All part of a larger update called The Persistence Enhanced, Firesprite is adding a bunch of lighting and particle improvements alongside quality of life and UX/UI refinements for both VR and non-VR players. With the addition of full DLSS support for NVIDIA RTX graphics cards – which uses AI to boost a PC’s graphical performance – players can unlock the experimental ray-traced reflections feature to make their gameplay experience look even better.

And when Firesprite says experimental it means it, saying: “we are not going to develop this any further, but we want to include this for those that want to tinker.” The studio does recommend using one of NVIDIA’s higher-end RTX cards like the 2080 Super – or an RTX 30-Series if you can get hold of one – so The Persistence maintains the necessary VR framerate.

If you have the hardware capable of running the new features then all you have to do is: “head to the “Raytracing” menu to turn it on along with configuring a DLSS profile,” the developer advises. However, it’s worth noting that: “Realtime Global Illumination and Ray-traced Shadows unfortunately cannot be enabled whilst in VR as the game does not boot.”

Originally for PlayStation VR back in 2018, Firesprite brought The Persistence to multiple platforms including PC VR headsets in 2020. Finding yourself onboard a doomed deep space colony starship in the year 2521, you play a security officer who wakes up to find the crew have been turned into horrific monsters. All the levels are procedurally generated so every time you die it’ll change, offering an everchanging labyrinth to explore and survive through.

Firesprite will be releasing The Persistence Enhanced update this Friday, 11th June as a free enhancement for current PC owners via Steam. Waltz of the Wizard’s Natural Magic Update Confirmed for July

Published

on

Virtual reality (VR) developer Aldin has been teasing its next big update for Waltz of the Wizard since 2020. Called “Natural Magic” its set to feature new locations as well a reworked spell casting system to make it feel, well…more natural. Today, as part of a slew of VR announcements to kick off the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2021 this week the studio has confirmed the update will arrive next month.

Previous updates like the “Telepath” movement system added incremental improvements, whereas Natural Magic will be Aldin’s largest expansion to date. Starting off in a peaceful courtyard sandbox where players can practice and play with the new magic system, they’ll find intuitive controls to pick up distant objects or unleash devastating attacks. This is useful as the other area is the Fortress, a sprawling location home to the Observers, interdimensional beings that harness magic to control time and space.

These “Observers” are the bad guys, of course, and to get to them players will encounter a variety of enemies to wield their magic against. The Fortress also houses hidden artefacts which might be useful. It’s also the first location the developer has built that is procedurally generated, so each run-through will be slightly different.

Waltz of the Wizard: Natural Magic will have plenty of other interesting features for hours of entertainment, including mic input which turns a players voice into magical soundwaves to attack foes, enemies with detachable bodyparts and believable defensive reactions, and user health shown by their fingers turning skeletal.

Waltz of the Wizard: Natural Magic is set to launch on 6th July 2021 as a free update for existing owners of the videogame. There is a slight caveat in the fact that the update will be for SteamVR and Oculus headsets but not for PlayStation VR. Aldin’s CEO Hrafn Thorisson previously said in November 2020 that future updates for the headset were on hold due to the lack of info regarding a PlayStation VR 2 (at the time).

Upload VR returned to E3 with its third annual showcase of the most inventive and intriguing games coming to VR. As the medium continues to mature year after year, it continues to be a platform for developers to innovate. Song in the Smoke

First announced for PSVR earlier this year, Song in the Smoke is a VR survival game and a departure for developer 17-Bit, better known for cartoony indie games like Skulls of the Shogun and Galak-Z. In a new developer diary, studio CEO Jake Kazdal explains how VR made him want to create not just a game but a fully living and breathing…

I Expect You to Die 2 Features Wil Wheaton, Launches This Summer

It’s E3 2021 week so there are plenty of videogame announcements fly around including a few virtual reality (VR) ones. Today, Schell Games has announced that its escape room sequel I Expect You to Die 2: The Spy and the Liar will be launching this summer and its got some star talent on board.

The studio has revealed that I Expect You to Die 2: The Spy and the Liar will feature six globe-trotting missions to foil Zoraxis’ plans for world domination. These new missions will still feature ingenious puzzles and cunning villains just like before, the first revealed being to protect the prime minister, who happens to be attending a theatre production by world-famous actor and celebrity John Juniper.

Schell Games managed to get Wil Wheaton (Big Bang Theory, Star Trek: Next Generation) to voice Juniper while the theme song is performed by world-renowned singer and songwriter Puddles Pity Party.

I Expect You To Die 2 builds upon everything our community loved about the first game, and we’re excited to take players on another adventure filled with espionage,” said Jesse Schell, CEO of Schell Games in a statement. “Wil and Puddles have been amazing to work with, and their enthusiasm has helped us expand the I Expect You To Die universe in compelling new ways. With Wil Wheaton bringing life to John Juniper, and Puddles’s dynamic performance of the new theme song, we’re confident players will feel immersed in this rich, story-driven evolution of the original game.”

If you enjoyed the first title and you have a PC VR headset then check out the Steam Next Fest this week because there will be a free demo of I Expect You to Die 2: The Spy and the Liar from 16th June.
