Quest App Lab Nears 300 Apps in Four Months, Eclipsing Apps on the Official Store

Published

on

Back in February Oculus launched App Lab for Quest which allows developers to distribute their games on the headset without going through Oculus’ curation process. There’s now nearly 300 games and apps available on App Lab, eclipsing the number of apps on the official Quest store.

Update – June 8th, 2021

There’s now 295 apps available for Quest via App Lab, according to submissions tracked by App Lab DB. In just four months, the number of apps on App Lab has surpassed the number of apps on the official Quest store, which stands at 282 after more than two years of operation. The discrepancy shows that many more developers would like to be on the official store than Oculus allows.

Quest App Lab games tracked on App Lab DB

App Lab apps are functionally ‘unlisted’ (unsearchable) in the main Quest store, but receive a normal store page which can be accessed directly via a URL and installed with a single click once logged in, just like any Quest app in the main store. The difference is that Oculus picks and chooses which apps to include in the main Quest store based on some qualitative criteria, while App Lab apps don’t need to meet any specific bar outside of being technically sound.

Having launched App Lab on February 3rd, and reaching 295 apps as of today, Oculus has approved an average of 2.4 apps per day to App Lab, which is up slightly compared to the first two months of App Lab.

The main Quest store sits around 282 apps. Given the time since the launch of the main Quest store, that’s an average of 0.38 apps added to the store per day.

For additional context, the number of Oculus PC applications sits around 1,800, with Go applications also at 1,800, and SteamVR applications around 4,900. Though all of these platforms have been around for years longer, none of them have been subject to the sort of curation that Oculus has imposed on Quest applications in the headset’s main store.

Below is a breakdown of the top 20 App Lab applications by rating and popularity.

Best Rated Quest Games in App Lab

The rating of each application is an aggregate of user reviews and a useful way to understand the general reception of each title by users.

Most Popular Quest Games in App Lab

The number of ratings gives a ballpark idea of the relative popularity of each title; a title with more ratings is likely to have been downloaded more than a title with less, though there’s certainly an unknown margin of error.

ENGAGE Oasis to Be VR Education’s Corporate Metaverse

Published

on

VR Education Holdings launched its virtual reality (VR) learning platform Engage back in 2018 and since then it’s gone from strength to strength, being used as one of the core apps in HTC’s Vive XR Suite. Today, the company has announced plans to develop a new corporate metaverse, called ENGAGE Oasis.

Engage Oasis

An evolution of the current Engage platform, ENGAGE Oasis will be a fully persistent virtual world designed entirely for enterprise use cases. VR Education’s clients will be able to meet and sell products and services directly to each other, whether they’re a global corporation, business professional or college student. Its design will help foster new connections either within a company or externally.

With its professional focus ENGAGE Oasis will see avatars and virtual locations tailored to those needs, allowing corporations to freely tailor their sector to their own style and branding, setting their own guidelines in the process. There will also be a marketplace where creators can sell digital items and provide services using non-fungible tokens, fiat currencies and cryptocurrencies.

“If Rec Room and Roblox are the TikTok and Twitch of the metaverse, we want ENGAGE Oasis to be the LinkedIn of the metaverse,” says David Whelan, CEO, VRE in a statement. “We think that young professionals, corporations, digital artists, and service providers will love all the opportunities being part of the metaverse will lead to. With the pandemic and climate change causing businesses to rethink how they interact externally and internally, the virtual world provided by ENGAGE Oasis has the potential for exponential growth.”

Engage Oasis

“ENGAGE is already a leader in the world of virtual communications, and our growing client base and proven technology underlines our belief that we can become the leader in the corporate metaverse,” Whelan adds. “We look forward to updating the market on our progress, including launch partners, in the coming months.”

The ENGAGE Oasis is expected to launch in H1 2022. Currently, Engage provides three solutions for clients: Virtual Campus, Virtual Office, and Virtual Events, with the new metaverse offered as an additional service to current users. These include Abbott Laboratories, Facebook, KPMG, MongoDB, and the US State Department.

As further details of ENGAGE Oasis are released, VRFocus will let you know.

Sam & Max’s Virtual Adventure Begins July for Oculus Quest

Published

on

Comedy adventures await in July as Happy Giant and Big Sugar Games have confirmed a launch date for crime-fighting duo Sam & Max’s first virtual reality (VR) videogame, Sam & Max: This Time It’s Virtual! Due to arrive in a couple of weeks, the initial launch will be solely for Oculus Quest.

Sam & Max - This Time It's Virtual

Returning after a 10-year hiatus, in Sam & Max: This Time It’s Virtual! you join the pair as a trainee looking to join their agency, the Freelance Police. As a cadet, you’ll be put through your paces by completing obstacle courses, getting to know the team and, of course, saving the world from giant monsters and aliens.

With a development team that includes Sam & Max creator Steve Purcell, LucasArts alumni Peter Chan (concept art), and Mike Stemmle (writer/designer) among others, Sam & Max: This Time It’s Virtual! will continue to feature the same comedy stylings fans of the series know and love. Sam’s the dog with a hat and is the level headed one of the duo whilst Max is…” a hyperkinetic naked rabbity thing”.

Alongside the Freelance Police Academy training challenges to test your grey matter as well as your shooting skills, you’ll have to head down Cap’n Aquabear’s rotting theme park to uncover the unusual secrets within. As this is a VR experience all the controls have been designed to immerse you in Sam and Max’s world, from firing rocket launchers and shooting cockroaches to punching clowns and talking to rats, there plenty of weirdness to enjoy.

Sam And Max VR

Sam & Max: This Time It’s Virtual! will launch for Oculus Quest on 8th July 2021, retailing for $29.99 USD. Other platforms have been confirmed with a Steam page now live listing the title as coming soon. PlayStation VR owners will have to wait until Q1 2022.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Sam & Max: This Time It’s Virtual!, reporting back with further updates.

Varjo Teases Its “biggest announcement ever” Coming Later This Week

Published

on

Varjo, the Finland-based company making enterprise headsets with industry-leading specs, is getting ready to reveal something big on June 24th.

Urho Konttori, Varjo founder and Chief Product Officer, teased that the company’s next reveal will be “so epic that it’s probably the biggest announce ever by Varjo.”

In the 20-minute showcase, Varjo promises to show off its “next big thing,” something that the company says will demonstrate “how the physical and the digital merge into a single experience, changing human interaction and universal collaboration for good.”

Varjo is known for producing ultra high-end headsets which push the boundaries of display resolutions. With the addition of eye-tracking and mixed reality applications, Varjo headsets are built for enterprise appeal, and are priced in thousands as a result.

The company’s latest headsets, VR-3 and XR-3, were revealed back in December 2020; considering the company’s promise to merge the physical and digital, it’s possible we may be getting a new variant that focuses more on the mixed reality side of things.

Varjo sets itself apart from other headset makers by incorporating two displays for each eye: a small, high-density microdisplay at the center, and a larger, more conventional display to fill out the field of view. These two displays are blended together nearly seamlessly, which essentially makes Varjo’s headsets an industry leader in perceived resolution (sometimes referred to as ‘retina resolution’) whilst providing a fairly substantial field of view.

The reveal, which Varjo is dubbing a “world premiere,” is going to be held on June 24th, 2021, at 12:00 pm ET (your local time). You can also sign up here to watch it live.

Blaston backs out as Facebook’s first Oculus VR ads partner

Published

on

Facebook has a sort of reverse Midas’ touch where everything it touches gets stained by its own stigmas. Every product it buys or gets close to eventually gets involved in its privacy issues or, at the very least, its advertising businesses. It was the latter surprised, shocked, and even disgusted Oculus users last week when the social networking giant announced … Continue reading
