Queenstown Airport has appointed a former senior Air New Zealand executive to be its new CEO.

Glen Sowry was previously the national flag carrier’s head of public affairs and government relations, and his last role was as CEO of retirement village provider Metlifecare.

His role will technically see him lead the larger Queenstown Airport Corporation (QAC), which also provides property maintenance services at Glenorchy Airstrip.

QAC currently employs around 50 staff and is owned by both the Queenstown Lakes District Council and Auckland International Airport.

“Queenstown Airport is a critical piece of social and economic infrastructure for the Southern Lakes region, as well as New Zealand,” said Sowry.

“I am excited about the opportunity to work with the board and wider team to shape the future of the airport in consultation with the community and QAC’s wide range of stakeholders.”

QAC chair Adrienne Young-Cooper said the board was pleased to have appointed a well-qualified business leader.

“The calibre of applicants from New Zealand and overseas was very high,” said Young-Cooper. “The board and I are looking forward to working with Glen to set the future direction for QAC and take the business forward.”

Queenstown, one of New Zealand’s premium tourist resorts, frequents the top 10 lists for the world’s most stunning airport approaches in the annual polls of flight charter, Private Fly. It won the top slot in 2015.
