Qantas Airlines AirBaltic stated in April of last year that it will be the first airline in the world to issue NFTs. Qantas, Australia’s national carrier, has now joined the digital asset craze. The airline revealed on Tuesday that it was working on a new set of non-fungible token digital art collectibles. Each piece of digital artwork will be one-of-a-kind owing to blockchain technology, allowing buyers to buy, own, collect, and sell their one-of-a-kind tokens. While airBaltic beat Qantas to the punch by roughly a year, the Australian national airline will be the first to provide loyalty points to the first purchase of a Qantas NFT. Given, of course, that the buyer is a frequent flyer member of the airline. Other ‘interesting future benefits for Qantas NFT members are in the works,’ according to the airline. On the airline’s website, potential customers may express their interest in the digital art tokens. The NFTs are expected to be released around the middle of the year. Qantas has promised that its NFTs will be delivered with net-zero emissions, utilising low-carbon platforms and carbon offsetting, in anticipation of any reaction from environmentalists over the usage of environmentally contentious blockchain technology transactions. The purpose for the move has not been disclosed, but if posts on Qantas’ social media are to be heeded, it will be in recognition of the airline’s long association with the Queen of the Skies. After nearly 50 years of service, the airline said farewell to its final 747 in July 2020.
