What is PUBG Mobile India?

PUBG Mobile Corp will launch PUBG Mobile India, a mobile game customized for the Indian audience. On September 4, 2020, the Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology banned 119 apps under Section 69A of the IT Act. The announcement termed these apps prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India, Defence of India, Security of State and Public order.

PUBG Mobile (the global version of the game) is included in this list and remains banned in the country. India is the biggest market for PUBG Mobile. As part of its efforts to comply with the government regulations, PUBG Mobile cut ties with Tencent in the Indian market days after the order. Despite this move, the Indian government refused to unban PUBG Mobile due to its violent content.

The game developer has addressed these issues with the release of its new game, PUBG Mobile India. PUBG now has a partnership with Microsoft’s Azure platform’s server hosting service. India banned PUBG Mobile on September 4.

The Indian government has taken a conservative approach in multiple areas. The Indian media highlighted vilified PUBG Mobile usage in a country that is famous for pressurizing children to academic success. In recent years, the Indian government has cracked down on adult websites following a High court order, although its implementation remains substandard.

The government recently brought OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hotstar and others under the purview of the information and broadcasting ministry, a move that might impact the content on these platforms. India’s neighboring country, China has banned violence and tweaks to blood visuals in video games.

Most of the top game developers have published China-specific versions of video games and in-game cosmetics to comply with local regulations. The Indian government extended the PUBG Mobile ban due to the game’s violent graphics according to news reports. These restrictions on media content and majoritarian laws such as the beef ban point towards a narrow-minded approach to development and progress.

PUBG Mobile has taken the fall with TV media blaming the game for ‘causing addiction‘ in youngsters. Video games are often a means for people escape the troubles of daily life. Video games often help players’ mental health acting as a release for mental stress. The Indian version of PUBG Mobile will have visual changes to ‘reduce’ the violent graphics in-game. With this move, India is moving closer to China in forcing tech companies to bend to local rules and regulations.

Despite the short break, Indian gamers were excited to play their favorite mobile game once again. After PUBG Mobile, TikTok‘s India head, Nikhil Gandhi said the company is working with the government and looking to make a comeback to the Indian market.
