Sony has now sold more than 10 million PlayStation 5 consoles, continuing its reign as the fastest-selling console in Sony history even as worldwide component shortages hamstring manufacturing.
“While PS5 has reached more households faster than any of our previous consoles, we still have a lot of work ahead of us as demand for PS5 continues to outstrip supply,” said Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan during an earnings call. “I want gamers to know that while we continue to face unique challenges throughout the world that affect our industry and many others, improving inventory levels remains a top priority for SIE.”
We estimate that the Xbox Series X|S total sell in was 6.5m as of June 30, 2021.

Alongside the console milestone, Sony shared sales numbers for some of its exclusive titles. Spider-Man: Miles Morales has sold more than 6.5 million copies since its November launch — though it’s not clear how many of those copies were for PS5 and how many were for PS4. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has sold more than 1.1 million copies since its June launch. Returnal has sold more than 560,000 copies since its April launch.
Microsoft hasn’t shared console unit sales since the Xbox One, saying only that the Series X|S are the company’s fastest-selling consoles ever. Niko Partners senior analyst Daniel Ahmad estimated the console had sold around 6.5 million units as of June 30, which would outpace the 5.7 million for Xbox One and 5 million for Xbox 360 in the same timeframe.
Ahmad expects the Series X|S to continue to outsell both previous generations “given its dual SKU strategy and content + Game Pass focus this generation.”
