Pot Luck was released on DigitalHD and DVD in North America by Giant Pictures, the digital film distribution division of Giant Interactive on the unofficial marijuana “holiday” 4/20, which started out as a counterculture event every April 20. With each passing year, as legalization and corporatization of marijuana becomes more prevalent, 4/20 has morphed into a more mainstream “holiday.”

3 Generations is a nonprofit organization that makes feature films, short films and videos about critical human rights issues, and is a unique platform at the intersection of independent film and social justice advocacy.

Pot Luck takes a road trip across the state of Colorado to find out what the new normal looks like. The war on drugs has failed, but is legalization of cannabis the answer? It has been five years since the people of Colorado voted to legalize cannabis in all its forms. A colorful cast of locals including businessmen, budtenders, barbers, cops and farmers share a stake in the still-evolving world of legal cannabis.

Gathering their stories and experiences the film looks beyond the headlines and hysteria and asks: Is this blazed new world a good one? Have the injustices of the war on drugs been addressed? Is legalization synonymous with greater social justice? What is driving the movement to legalize cannabis, progressive ideals or unfettered capitalism?

Criss-crossing the state, filming people going about their working lives, Pot Luck gradually reveals new material about what legalization looks like on a day-to-day basis. It exposes some uncomfortable truths about public health and safety, about who and what is driving the industry as well as the collateral damage.

The potential benefits of medical cannabis and miracle cures are witnessed along with concerns about the unintended consequences of full recreational use of the drug. Pot Luck pays special attention to the impact on minorities, the very people who advocates claim will most benefit from legalization.

“I used to live in Colorado. Legalization has changed the state in visible ways. As a progressive, cognizant of the failures of the war on drugs, I was curious to look more deeply and document the changes in my former home state. Although the motivation for this film was quite personal, I have let the Coloradans show us their new landscape, share their perspectives and tell their stories,” said Wells.

Pot Luck, a 3 Generations Production; was Written and Directed by Jane Wells; Produced by Jane Wells, Simon Brook, Nadia Zilkha; Director of Photography Emmanuel Bastien;Editor Barbara Bossuet; Composer Christopher North; Post Production Supervisor Francesco Portinari; and Associate Producer Jamie Brandel.

Giant Pictures released Pot Luck on April 14, 2020 on all digital platforms including, Apple TV, Prime Video, Xbox / Microsoft Store, Vimeo On Demand, Google Play, Vudu, and Hoopla, plus DVD nationwide.

Longitudinal studies on cannabis

Joseph Boden writes:

In 101 days, New Zealanders will determine whether or not cannabis should be legalised. In making that decision, there is plenty to learn from the Christchurch and Dunedin longitudinal studies, which together have contributed a vast amount of knowledge regarding cannabis-related harm.

The Christchurch Health and Development Study and the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study were both founded in the 1970s. Each includes more than 1000 participants, with individuals followed into their 40s. Along the way we have repeatedly asked about their involvement with cannabis and problems arising from this. Professor Wayne Hall of the University of Queensland, an internationally renowned figure in substance use research, has referred to our studies in the context of cannabis research as “the best designed and most informative of these [epidemiological] studies”.

These studies are the gold standard for research.

What did we find? We learned that cannabis use is very common, with as many as 80% of participants having used cannabis on at least one occasion. Rates of regular use (using at least weekly) were far lower (35%). We also found that higher levels of cannabis use, particularly at younger ages, were related to mental health problems including increased risk of cannabis use disorder and major depression. Most strikingly, earlier and heavier cannabis use was also related to increased reports of psychotic symptoms in…
