The PlayStation Studios boss says Sony is “just as committed to making these quality experiences as we are to experimentation and to coming up with fresh ideas.”

The last couple of weeks have been quite active for PlayStation, thanks to reports of its shifting priorities and the resulting internal changes. While stories such as The Last of Us being remade and Days Gone 2 not being greenlit have grabbed headlines, something else that’s caught the attention of people is how Sony is reportedly shifting focus away from making smaller, experimental games and instead doubling down on its focus on blockbuster AAA development.

Speaking recently with GamesIndustry, however, PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst suggested that Sony is still committed to creating a diverse and distinct lineup, and that it remains as focused on making experimental games as it is on AAA production. In a conversation discussing the recent the recent Firewalk Studios announcement, Hulst said: “I think that the games that we make are as distinct and diverse as they can be. From Sackboy to Astro Bot to Dreams to these kind of games that you’re referring to, like The Last of Us Part 2 and Ghost of Tsushima.”

“And you can bet that we will carry on making these games, because they are the heart and soul of what we do here at PlayStation Studios,” he continued. “But at the same time, we are just as committed to making these quality experiences as we are to experimentation and to coming up with fresh ideas.”

Recently, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan said that Sony was committed to delivering the best ever exclusive content support for the PS5 in PlayStation history.

As far as the immediate future is concerned, Returnal launches exclusively for the PS5 later this week, with Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart due out in June.
