PlayStation 5 Has Finally Been Unveiled by Sony

Date:

So it has happened at last, after the original PlayStation 5 ‘Future of Gaming’ broadcast was delayed from last week Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has now given fans what they wanted, a look at the new console ahead of its launch later this year.

The showcase was mainly about the videogames you’ll be playing at the end of 2020 and into 2021, with an hour’s worth of visually appealing titles, teasing the potential of PlayStation 5. What stole the show, however, was the unveiling of PlayStation 5 itself.

Rival Xbox Series X did this a while back making SIE seem really hesitant in announcing any details. PlayStation 4 is the success story of this generation, in doing so building the brand to even greater heights, creating legions of fans in the process.

And what to make of the PlayStation 5 design? Well, as you can see its no black monolith, with a sweeping mixture of white and black curves and some blue accents. This can be seen across the range, from the new controller to the headphones and even the new HD Camera. Most interestingly are the options of a PlayStation 5 with or without a disc drive. The digital edition certainly looks the sleeker of the two.

While the online event was flashy and showed a lot of content during the hour+ presentation there was one notable exception, no PlayStation VR. VRFocus wasn’t expecting any new hardware but it would have been nice to see a little nod to one of the most popular virtual reality (VR) headsets on the market.

PlayStation 5 has previously been confirmed to support the headset so the hope was that PlayStation VR might have got a brief mention, a couple of VR experiences to look forward to during the festive season. Alas there was nothing, the only glimmer was Astro Bot Rescue Mission sequel Astro’s Playroom but there wasn’t even a hint that it would support VR.

At least everyone now knows what the machine looks like, gearing up anticipation for the Holiday 2020 launch. Here’s hoping that in the months to come SIE or a developer will release some details of PlayStation’s VR future. When they do, VRFocus will let you know.
