Phishing Attack in Progress Against Ukrainian Oil Firm Burisma

Date:

The oil & gas company is at the heart of the ongoing US presidential impeachment process.

Burisma Holdings, a Ukrainian oil & gas company, has been the victim of a phishing campaign that began in early November 2019 and is ongoing. The phishing attack is notable because Burisma is the Ukrainian company at the center of the current presidential impeachment process in the United States. Further, according to Area 1 Security, the firm that first detected the campaign, the attacking organization is the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Army (GRU.)

First reported by the New York Times, the attack, according to intelligence agencies, is very similar to the attacks launched against Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign. While it is not yet known what the attackers were after, the payloads seem designed to gather login credentials from targeted email recipients.

According to New York Times reporting, the phishing campaign is running alongside active intelligence activities on the part of Russian actors, aimed at gathering information that could be damaging to Democratic candidate Joe Biden and his family.
