Philadelphia Eagles’ Player Spotlight: DeAndre Torrey

Date:

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed running back DeAndre Torrey according to NFL Network. Torrey played a North Texas during his college tenure and had a lot of success with the Mean Green. This article will discuss his college career and what DeAndre Torrey can bring to the table at running back for the Eagles.

College Career

Torrey really stood out as one the best players on the Mean Green’s offense in 2018, which was his rookie year. He played in 13 games, totaling 977 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns. The North Texas running back averaged 75. 2 yards a game. Torrey also excelled at receiving. He had 205 receiving yards and two touchdowns.  Following an incredible rookie year, Torrey began the 2019 season on the Doak Walker Award watch list. However, Torrey did not get as many carries as he did the year before. He had 73 carries in 2019 compared to 175 carries in 2018. This hurt his numbers that year as he racked up a total of 380 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Furthermore, Torrey also had 96 yards receiving and one touchdown.

Torrey got back on track during his junior season with the Mean Green. He got a lot more carries that year with 113. The North Texas running back rushed for 656 yards and six touchdowns during that season. His longest rush of that year was 60 yards. Torrey saved his best year for his senior year season. He rushed for over 1,200 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also averaged a career-high 101.3 yards a game. Furthermore, Torrey had 115 yards receiving and one touchdown. Torrey earned second-team All C-USA honors through the coach’s vote. In addition, Pro Football Focus also awarded him, third team, All C-USA.

What Torrey brings to the table

DeAndre Torrey is really a do it all type of running back. He has great speed in the open field and can outrun defenders easily. He also has patience and is good at finding holes within the line of scrimmage.  Another thing about Torrey is that he can break tackles and even avoid tackles quite well. There was this one run against a ranked UTSA team where Torrey looked like he was going to be stuffed behind-the-line scrimmage. However, he avoided getting stuffed by juking and breaking the tackles of the initial defenders. Once he broke free, Torrey, ran it in for a touchdown.

Torrey is the sixth running back on this Eagles team. This number will obviously go down a lot before the regular season begins. He may not make the 53-man roster this year as there is a lot of talent on the top of the depth chart. However, if the Eagles like what they see out of him during training camp then he could be a good player to add to the practice squad. He may even make it on the main roster during the season depending on how players perform and injuries.

This concludes this Philadelphia Eagles Player Spotlight on DeAndre Torrey.
